Riot Girl Zine. Edited by Jane & Sarah Collins. Jane Collins from Llandudno echoed Kirsty’s
estrangement from the term riot grrrl when she wrote in her fanzine ‘Electra’ in 2001: More than ever
we need to make young girls feel empowered. We need to make ourselves feel good about our views,
about our feminism. The rise in misogynist rock exemplifies this need for change. A need for the new.
And so this is why I make the statement that riot grrrl is dead. It’s a dated term, a movement from the
early nineties. It is still a term of relevance as an inspiration, of course, but that is what it is - inspiration.
I wasn’t old enough for riot grrrl first time round. I’ve loved the music for a number of years but now I
want to create my own revolution. (3)

Originally published as “Los Angeles Flipside” , then just
“Flipside”, from no 29 as “Flipside Fanzine”, without a doubt
the rarest and most important run that was ever on the
market. The crucial first decade of this seminal LA Punk/Rock
fanzine, together with Slash the defining documents of the
early LA punk scene. Whereas Slash sets can be assembled
with some patience, a complete run of Flipside borders
on the impossible thanks to the scarcity of the early issues.
Flipside issues no. 1 and no. 3 rank among the rarest and
most sought-after US punk fanzines. The set concludes with
a copy of the 10th Anniversary issue no.54) which includes
highlights and excellent print histories for the magazine’s first
decade. Flipside continued publishing until 2000, but not
with such important contributors and bands of this early period. (note:
the second issue label 52 is actually 53). No. 16 is a compilation of earlier
issues. Features Eulogy, Punk Roq, Germs, Clash, Waesels, Iggy, Fashion
Show, Dead Boys, Dave Trout (Weirdos), Zippers, Spastics, Rodney
Bingenheimer, Backstage Pass, Runaways, Masque, The Quick, Skulls, Bags,

Editor: Ed Dwyer. From the announcement-letter (May 16,
1974): “The Trans-High Corporation of New York announced
today the publication of a new magazine.... It offers extensive
and sophisticated coverage of the pleasure and psychochemical
culture.... articles ranging from the ecology of cannabis paper to
an investigative report on a nine-ton pot bust. ...A regular feature
of High Times is a comprehensive Wall Street Journal-type
listing of psychochemical prices around the world (=in fact ‘High
Witness News’). ..Also featured are medical and legal columns
written by leading experts as well as eclectic reviews of films,
records and books. ... psychochemicals have become the cause
of psychological and sociological problems; to alleviate these
problems, the first step is to take a more thorough look. This is
the purpose of High Times.” Contribs. by Richard Ashley, Bruce
Eisner, Albert Goldman, Michael Horowitz, Ron Rosenbaum,
John Wilcock, Deanne Stillman, a.o. Also interviews with (o.a.)
the Dalai Lama, Albert Hofmann, Dr. Norman Zinberg, Andy
Warhol, Peter Beard, Fran Lebowitz, Keith Richard, Marianne
Faithfull, etc. In addition to the controversial drug coverage and
in-depth countercultural articles, there is a sizeable amount of
early punk rock coverage thanks to Tom Forcade’s early interest
in the Sex Pistols and punk music as the “next big thing”. Forcade
even provided funding for John Holmstrom’s Punk magazine at
one point. While High Times continues to this day, the focus here
was on music related coverage and therefore this particular run
ends in 1981 where the musical interest also begins to taper off.

All issues published of the first English language edition of one of the most important new music periodicals of
its time, which began publication in German in 1954 out of the circle of composers which coalesced around the
Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (NWDR). The covers are brilliantly and minimally designed in a variety of hues by
the unheralded but important Austrian designer Willi Bahner. The contributors are largely European, though John
Cage offers several important texts.
The periodical was the most important English language source of information for European experimental and
serial music, though this English language version was often contentiously received by English language readers.
The periodical came to an end after a falling out between the two editors, with the epic issue no. 8. To the credit of
the periodical, one of the most bitter attacks on the magazine was published in die Reihe itself, an attack on work
by Stockhausen by the Dutch physicist Adriaan Fokker - a fitting coda to a provocative and contentious periodical.
Each issue was devoted to articles on a particular theme. No. 1 - Electronic Music, No. 2 - Anton Webern, No.
3 - Musical Craftmanship, 4. Young Composers, 5. Reports Analyses, 6. Speech and Music, 7. Form-Space, and 8.
Retrospective.

Substantial run of one the most respected fanzines in the UK.. Published in Glasgow
by Tony Drayton, Ripped & Torn included interviews with, or features on, most
of the important bands of the period, but also devoted material to art, including
a feature on Derek Jarman. Illustrated throughout with original photographs, and
combined with its anarchic cut-and-paste aesthetic, it became one of the best printed
records of the times, along with the equally important Sniffin’ Glue. A total of 18
issues were produced, with the final issue edited by Vermilion Sands, a female biker,
musician (fronting for the band Dick Envy), and writer for the American fanzine
Search & Destroy.
