ESSAY: WHY DID THE FILIPINOS HAVE THE COURAGE TO REVOLT AGAINST
THE SPANISH ADMINISTRATION?

1521, it was the year where Philippines is discovered by the Spaniards. It was Ferdinand
Magellan who discovers our ancient citizens. King Charles I decided to send an expedition to
Moluccas for spices. Its main reason is to find a route for the said place. That is the time
Philippines is discovered. Spaniards claimed and colonized the Philippines since they are the
ones who discover it. Many things have changed since the Spaniards came. Upon their
colonization, Spaniards introduced us more of the Western Culture. To be specific, they taught
us their own style of living. Their beliefs and philosophy.

As the colonization of the Spaniards came. The rights of the Filipinos went limited. Their
freedom is manipulated by the colonizers. Monopolies of the Spaniards sprung out slowly.
Corruptions started to roll out from the government officials who holds and administrates the
barrios. Polo y serbicio where Filipinos are worked for Spaniards like the construction of roads,
churches and other infrastructures. And if they don’t work for them, they have been punished or
forced to be in jail. Even friars grabbed the lands of the native Filipinos. Filipinos endured this
for a long time until Filipinos are desperate to take their freedom back from them. Revolts are
made.

Revolts means a rebellion. They want to seek freedom. Their motives on establishing a
revolt are the following: Political motives, Peronal Motives and Religious Motives. Like the
Maniego Revolt last 1660. Their main reason of revolting is due to the burden of more tribute,
forced labor and rice exploitation. This revolt was the start of the uproar of more Filipino revolts
in other province. But the first and other early revolt are not successful. Some leaders have been
executed from their disagreement from the Spaniard’s Administration. sSpaniards did such tricks
to supress the revolts of the Filipinos. Filipinos do not have the knowledge in battling and
welfare and most revolts don’t have a concrete national leader. In 1800s, Filipino Nationalism
rose up and Philippines began to open for the world trade. Making the Spaniard’s administration
weaker but still in there.

As many authors said, History is a big lesson for us. Due to what the past happened in our
ancient people. It helps us to change the wrongdoings of the Spaniards. Filipinos learned to fight
and be independent. To stand off against the Spaniards. If the wrongdoings weren’t changed.
History repeats itself. It is not right for to be maltreated by other foreigners. It is against the
human rights. We have our freedom now. We are a Democratic Country.
