«Pumpkins Cardigan»
Paola Reina and similar 32 cm / 13 inch dolls edition

Anna Kibalchich-Poda
Materials and Tools
 4 colors of half-wool yarn: main color, orange, black and green – 250 m / 50 g (I use Iceland Kid
Mohair and Baby Alpaca yarn by Etrofil)
 circular knitting needles 2 mm with 60 cm (or longer) flexible cable length
 5 small buttons for fastener
 crochet hook 2 mm (for auxiliary function)

I would also like to note the tools. I prefer to use circular knitting needles on the line, as they allow you to
do a fitting on the toy at any time (when knitting with three or more knitting needles, fitting becomes more
problematic). Meanwhile circular knitting needles with 40 cm flexible cable length (or less) are not
appropriate for knitting this cardigan’s sleeves with magic loop method, you may be sure of it if you
read through this pattern. While the needles and crochet hook should be maximal equal size.

Enjoyable knitting!

Knitting progress in whole
I bring a pattern of knitting scheme of the Pumpkins Cardigan below. I make it for you to have a
general idea about the knitting way:
• we knit from the top downward, from neck to waist;
• along the chest and back line (round yoke) in knit rows we will make even increases – this will
allow us not only to increase the number of stitches to proceed with sleeves, but also to form a round
yoke;
• make buttonholes on the placket by way of yarning over;
• when we start knitting armpits, we need to transfer sleeves’ loops on additional thread and
continue knitting the cardigan till the needed length;
• finishing knitting the cardigan till the needed length, we come back to sleeves and knit them
seamless till the needed length;
• after we finish knitting the cardigan, we embroider the pumpkins and sew the buttons.
I want to note that in this tutorial I show how to knit a cardigan on a toy with the following
parameters: waist - 18 cm (7.08 in), neck - 8 cm (3.14 in), chest (armpit) - 18 cm (7.08 in), arm – 6 cm
(2.36 in).
Using a different yarn and larger/smaller needles, you can make this model fits the toy with
different parameters.

Abbreviations
slst – selvage (selvedge) stitch
K – knit
P – purl
2 in 1 – make 2 new stitches into 1 old
yo – yarn over
(…) * n times – the combination of loops in brackets should be knitted the n-number of times

3
Knitting the cardigan
Before we start, let’s discuss important points:
• the first stitch of every row we will start with selvage stitch;
• every last loop of the row we will purl;
• the first four and the last four stitches of each row form a button placket, therefore, in the general
pattern of the fabric, the pattern of these stitches will differ in the purl rows.

Cast on 42 stitches (sts). Make a ribbing stitch collar in the first five rows
row 1: slst, K3, (K2, P2) * 8 , K5, P [42 sts in the row]
row 2: in this round yarning over will create a buttonhole:
slst, K3, (P2, K2) * 8, K2, yo, K, P [43]

To make yarn over, just bring the working thread on the working needle, while the needle we bring under the
working thread from right to left, so that the thread is in front of the needle as shown in the photo:

row 3: so that in the subsequent rows the width of the placket was even, knit two stitches together at
the end of this row where you formed a buttonhole:
slst, K2, K2together, (K2, P2) * 8, K5, P [42]

4
row 4: slst, K3, (P2, K2) * 8, P2, K3, P [42]
row 5: slst, K3, (K2, P2) * 8, K5, P [42]
The collar is ready, now proceed with knitting the main part of the cardigan
row 6: slst, K4, 2 in 1, (K3, 2 in 1) * 8, K3, P [51]

How to make 2 new stitches into 1 old (you can use a crochet hook to make it easier)
1. Pick up the working thread through the nearest loop: 2. Take the needle/hook out with the working thread to
form a loop (do not drop the loop from the needle!):

3. Bring the needle/hook through the further loop and 4. Take the needle/hook out with the working thread to
pick up the working thread: form the second loop:

5. If you used the crochet hook, Loops that you have formed on the hook, bring on the right needle

row 7: slst, K3, P43, K3, P [51] (photo 1, page 6)

row 8: slst, (K4, 2 in 1) * 9, K4, P [60]
row 9: slst, K3, P52, K3, P [60]
row 10: slst, K6, 2 in 1, (K5, 2 in 1) * 8, K3, P [69]
row 11: slst, K3, P61, K3, P [69]
Create another buttonhole in rows 12 and 13:
row 12: slst, K4, 2 in 1, (K6, 2 in 1) * 8, K5, yo, K, P [79]
row 13: slst, K2, K2together, P70, K3, P [78] (photos 2 and 3, page 6)

row 15: slst, K3, P78, K3, P [86]
row 16: slst, (K16, 2 in 1) * 4, K16, P [90]
rows 17 and 19: slst, K3, P82, K3, P [90]
rows 18 and 20: slst, K88, P [90]
row 21: • knit the first half of the front: slst, K3, P11 (photo 4);
• transfer the loops of the first sleeve (18 stitches) to a waste piece of yarn (photo 5);
• then knit the back: P24 (photo 6):

• then transfer the loops for the second sleeve (18 sts) to a second waste piece of yarn;
• finish the row with the second half of the front: P11, K3, P [54]:

Create the 3rd buttonhole in rows 22 and 23:
row 22: slst, K51, yo, K, P [55]
row 23: slst, K2, K2together, P46, K3, P [54]

rows 24, 26, 28 and 30: slst, K52, P [54]

rows 25, 27 and 29: slst, K3, P46, K3, P [54]
Create the 4th buttonhole in rows 31 and 32:
row 31: slst, K, yo, K2, P46, K3, P [55]
row 32: slst, K49, K2together, K2, P [54]
rows 33, 35 and 37: slst, K3, P46, K3, P [54]
rows 34 and 36: slst, K52, P [54]
Finish knitting the cardigan with the ribbon 2*2:
rows 38 and 40: slst, K3, (K2, P) * 12, K5, P [54]
row 39: slst, K3, (P2, K2) * 12, P2, K3, P [54]
Create the last – 5th – buttonhole in rows 41 and 42:
row 41: slst, K, yo, K2, (P2, K2) * 12, P2, K3, P [55]
row 42: slst, K3, (K2, P2) * 12, K2, K2together, K2, P [54]
row 43: cast off

Knit the sleeves
Now every sleeve of the cardigan has 18 loops. Divide it in two – we have 9 loops on each
needle. Bring the needles in sleeve loops from up to down from neck to the bottom (photo 7 and photo
8). Take off the waste piece of yarn and see that we have an undesired hole there (photo 9).

photo 7 photo 8 photo 9

To get rid of this hole, just pick up 6 loops where armpit is. Use a crochet hook to make it easier
(photo 10). Then transfer 3 loops from the hook to each needle. That is, there will be 12 loops on each
needle (photo 11), 24 loops in total:

photo 10 photo 11

To make the sleeve seamless, use the magic loop method.

rounds 1–25: use K only. The beginning of each round is under the armpit

Watch this video tutorial and you will know How pick up the loops and avoid the hole under armpit
and How to knit with Magic Loop Method – https://youtu.be/abUGtwYm6yI . In the first round have
an eye on the twisted loops: knit through the front loop or back loop.

rnd 26: in this round we will form the ribbon 2*2: (K2, P2together, P) * 2, K2, P2, (K2, P2together, P)
* 2 [20]
rnds 27-31: (K2, P2) * 5 [20]

8
rnd 32: cast off. Cut the yarn leaving approx. 4 cm (1.5 in) but do not pull it out (watch the video
tutorial below)
The first sleeve is finished (photo 12). The sleeve underarm looks very neat (photo 13):

photo 12 photo 13

The same way knit the second sleeve. After this you need to hide all thread tails. Watch the video
here to find it out – https://youtu.be/f6vdlEypK5A .

Pumpkins Embroidery
If you have any difficulties with knitting pattern using jacquard technic, just embroider it. I use
duplicate stitch or Swiss darning to addselve the motif. It is an easier technique than working the
pumpkins in jacquard. There is a photo tutorial for duplicate stitch or watch the video tutorial here –
https://youtu.be/AuMa2KOMfaM .

Sew the buttons and your pretty Pumpkins Cardigan is finished!
