Abstract

House Of Quality

The “house of quality,” the basic design tool of the management approach known as quality

function deployment (QFD), originated in 1972 at Mitsubishi’s Kobe shipyard site. Toyota

and its suppliers then developed it in numerous ways. The house of quality has been used

successfully by Japanese manufacturers of consumer electronics, home appliances, clothing,

integrated circuits, synthetic rubber, construction equipment, and agricultural engines.

Japanese designers use it for services like swimming schools and retail outlets and even for

planning apartment layouts. It is a part of the quality function deployment (QFD) and utilizes

a planning matrix to relate what the customer wants to how a firm (that produces the

products) is going to meet those wants. [4]

The basic structure is a table with "Whats" as the labels on the left and "Hows" across the

top. The roof is a diagonal matrix of "Hows vs. Hows" and the body of the house is a matrix

of "Whats vs. Hows". Both of these matrices are filled with indicators of whether the

interaction of the specific item is a strong positive, a strong negative, or somewhere in

between. It’s called the House of Quality because of the correlation matrix that is roof shaped

and sits on top of the main body of the matrix. The correlation matrix evaluates how the

defined product specifications optimize or sub-optimize each other. [3]

Introduction

The main aim of this project to find the “whats” which are important cirterias and improve

the quality of the SUV vehicle as a product according to the customers’ demand. For this

purpose i have made a survey and collected 30 data for 10 different criterias which are; Price,

Power, Fuel Consumption, Vehicle Acoustics, Appareance, Brand, Weight of the Vehicle,

Acceleration Time, Comfort, Engine Volume and, i calculated the average importance

(arithmetic mean) of each theese critarias for the customers.

Description of the Problem

Creating a house of quality for SUV vehicle is the main process of this project.

1. Making a survey and finding the Voice of Customer according to sutomer’s demands.

2. Analyzing the survey results.

3. Making the left side of the house of quality

4. Product specifications and their correlations between each other.

5. Making the uppers side of the house of quality

6. Making the center of the house of quality.

7. Evaluating the most and the least favorable SUV model and their technical analysis.

8. Completing the lower part of the house of quality for SUV vehicle.
Method of Procedure

We should determine the demands of the customer and find the important parameters.

Survey Results

30 participants have filled the survey and decided the importance of 10 criterias for a SUV

vehicle by giving numbers from 1 to 10 (1 is very less, 10 is the most important). The results

are below.
AVERAGE IMPORTANCE OF EACH CRITERIA OUT OF 10
Fiyat/Price = 7.8
Güç/Power= 7.5
Yakıt Tüketimi/Fuel Consumption= 7.1
Araç Akustiği/Vehicle Acoustics= 6.9
Dış görünüm/Appareance= 7.5
Marka/Brand= 7
Araç Ağırlığı/Weight of the Vehicle= 6
İvmelenme süresi/Acceleration Time= 7.1
Konfor/Comfort= 8.6
Motor Hacmi/Engine Volume= 6.7
Putting The Criterias In Order
So that we can now order the criterias from 1 to 10 in order of priorities for the customer.

1- Konfor/Comfort= 8.6
2- Fiyat/Price = 7.8
3- Güç/Power= 7.5
4- Dış görünüm/Appareance= 7.5
5- Yakıt Tüketimi/Fuel Consumption= 7.1
6- İvmelenme süresi/Acceleration Time= 7.1
7- Marka/Brand= 7
8- Araç Akustiği/Vehicle Acoustics= 6.9
9- Motor Hacmi/Engine Volume= 6.7
10- Araç Ağırlığı/Weight of the Vehicle= 6

Tüketici İstekleri Önem Puanı

Konfor/Comfort 5
Fiyat/Price 4
Güç/Power 4
Dış görünüm/Appareance 4
Yakıt Tüketimi/Fuel Consumption 4
İvmelenme süresi/Acceleration Time 3
Marka/Brand 3
Araç Akustiği/Vehicle Acoustics 3
Motor Hacmi/Engine Volume 2
Araç Ağırlığı/Weight of the Vehicle 2

(5 = high , 1 = low)
Table.1. Left Side of the House of Quality
I have asked the participants which model and brand they would prefer by taking account of

the price/overall performance of the product and let them make one decision out of four

different SUV vehicle models. The result showed that Honda CR-V is the most preferred

product while the Subaru XV is the least preferred one. The results can be seen below.

So now we can evaluate the techincal and physical features of these two products and then we are
able to make comments on what to improve of a SUV product to be successful in the industry.
Conclusion

The aim of this Project was to create a house of quality to be able to see “whats” on the left

which are the demands including most and the least wanted ones and “hows” at the top which

are how the firms meet those demands on the product. We evaluated the the rating of
importance of the “hows” to see which parameter or method is most important and preferable

for the manufacturer.
