What is KSAO?

KSAOs are knowledge, skills, and abilities that a person must possess in
order to perform the duties of his or her position. KSAs are listed on each
position’s job description and serve as a guide for applicants, employees,
and departments to evaluate and assess a person’s likelihood for success
in a job.
While KSAOs in the form of essays or narratives may no longer be listed as
requirements, they should not be dismissed. Employers may call it by other names,
such as Professional Technical Qualification or Quality Ranking Factors. Some
government agencies still use the form of a written essay or narrative assessment in
the selection process, and some businesses require a full-form KSAO as a method
to identify the best -suited candidates to fill job listings.

ELEMENTS OF KSAO:

Knowledge – the subjects, topics, and items of information that an

employee should know at the time he or she is hired or moved into the job.
Knowledge represents bodies of information that are applied directly to the
performance of work functions.
 Federal regulations: Knowing the laws and regulations required by the federal
governments
 Document preparation practices: Knowing how documents should be written
 Engineering practices: Knowing how things in specific industries should be
designed or engineered

Skills – technical or manual proficiencies which are usually learned or

acquired through training. Skills should be measurable and observable.

 Carpentry
 Computer repair
 Leadership
 Public speaking

Abilities – the present demonstrable capacity to apply several knowledge

and skills simultaneously in order to complete a task or perform an
observable behavior. Abilities may also relate to personal and social
attributes which tend to be innate or acquired without formal instructions.
Abilities are enduring talents that can help a person do a job.

 The ability to organize: Results are indicated by how well you organize and
plan work, meetings and projects

 The ability to analyze issues: This shows how the situations, programs and
problems are understood

 The ability to communicate verbally and in writing: This demonstrates how well
others can understand you

Other personal-characteristics, which refers to anything else not covered

by the other three and are needed to perform a job well The decision as to
which type of job analysis method to use depends on its purpose.

 Proactive — takes initiative to get things done without prompting

 Copes well in stressful environments — handles complex tasks
 Reliability — assigned work is completed ahead of schedule and the quality
of work is exceptional
 Multiple work assignments — capable of successfully handling various and
sundry tasks

Importance:
Knowledge and skills are best developed through training activities that
incorporate theoretical learning and hands-on application of key concepts and
tools. For instance, a person who wants to be a project manager must
understand the key concepts of that role, such as scope, work breakdown
structure, and critical path, but must also gain experience incorporating
elements of those concepts into a real project.

Strengthening natural abilities is primarily a coaching challenge. Observation,

feedback, and improvement can be applied to nurture abilities.
KSAO in merchandising: human beings bring in their personality, values,
attitudes, perceptions, and other stable traits to work. While human beings bring their traits to
work, every organization is also different, and every job is different. According to the
interactionist perspective, behavior is a function of the person and the situation interacting
with each other. The fit between what we bring to our work environment and the
environmental demands influences not only our behavior but also our work attitudes.
Therefore, person-job fit and person-organization fit are positively related to job satisfaction
and commitment. When our abilities match job demands, and when our values match
company values, we tend to be more satisfied with our job and more committed to the
company we work for. When companies hire employees, they are interested in assessing at
least two types of fit. Person organization fit refers to the degree to which a person’s
personality, values, goals, and other characteristics match those of the organization. Person-
job fit is the degree to which a person’s knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics
match the job demands. (Human resources professionals often use the abbreviation KSAO to
refer to these four categories of attributes.)

EXAMPLE:

 Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic

planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership
technique, production methods, and coordination of people and
resources.

 Skill in monitoring/assessing the performance of self, other individuals,
or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action.

 Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs.

 Ability to direct and organize program activities.
 Ability to establish goals and objectives.
 Ability to establish program goals and objectives that support the
strategic plan.
 Ability to effectively plan and delegate the work of others.
 Ability to plan, assign, and/or supervise the work of others.
 Ability to train others.
Drawbacks: The general criticisms of using a KSAO framework for job
applications or candidate evaluation tool include:

 Long and sometimes redundant job descriptions

 Complex and frustrating application processes
 Confusion over the differences between the terms, especially skills and
abilities

Some job applications include a request to describe your KSAO, usually in the
form of a brief essay. Keep those three terms straight, and you'll be halfway
there already.

CONCLUTAION: Todays garments fully depend on merchandising. A

good merchandiser can develop the quality of product and increase the
sale of the product.

Merchandising is a big job and is a complex one .it is so much important

on our textile industry.

To build up a good career in garment industry we need to follow KSAO.
