CHAPTER TWO

NOUN
Noun is a part of speech thst denotes a person , animal , place , thing or idea. There are
two types of noun : concrete noun and abstract noun

2.1 CONCRETE NOUN

Concrete noun is the name of something or someone that we experience through our sense.
1. Proper Noun
Proper noun is always preceded by a capital letter for the names: cities, countries,
companies, individuals, schools, etc.

Example:
a) Indonesia
- Indonesia is a beautiful country.
- Jakarta is capital city of Indonesia.
b) Bali
- Many people come to Bali for holiday.
- I am proud to live in Bali
c) Tiara
- Tiara’s hobby is dance.
- Tiara is a good girl.
d) PT. MajuMundur
- The name of My Father’s office is PT. MajuMundur.
- PT. MajuMundur has many investors.
e) SekolahMenengahAtas
- My name of senior high school is SMA N 2 Mengwi.
- The address of SMA N 2 Mengwi at Munggu village.

2. Common Noun
Common noun is words used to name general items. Common noun begins with a
lowercase letter unless it is at the beginning of a sentence.
Example:
a) Bicycle
- I ride a bicycle every Sunday.
- My Father give me bicycle.
b) Table
- There is a table in the classroom.
- Tina is reading a book on the table.
c) Television
- I rarely watch television.
- Many programs are aired on television.
d) Motorcycle
- I have three motorcycles.
- He bought a motorcycle in showroom.
e) Book
- I borrowed some book at library.
- She is reading a book in the library.

3. Material Noun
Material noun used to indicate a noun that come from a unripe substance.
Example:
a) Gold
- He is looking some gold in the river
- I purchased a gold ring
b) Soil
- Rita is bringing a bucket of soil to the yard
- The soil in Indonesia is very fertile
c) Oil
- My mom is buying oil in the market
- Father is bringing two bottle of oil to the kitchen
d) Diamond
- The diamond is twinkle like a star
- Yuliantika found some diamond yesterday
e) Agate
- There are some people selling agate
- My father have a lot of agate for making a ring

4. Collective Noun
Collective noun is a word which refers to a collection of things taken as a whole.
Example:
a) Choir
- The choir is singing in the church now
- The choir sang a traditional son just now
b) Jury
- The jury is sitting in front of the participant
- The jury is walking around the contest area
c) Cattle
- The breeder feeds their cattle
- Mr.Anwar put his cattle in the yard
d) Army
- Army have a good body and stamina
- Army usually help the victim if there a disaster
e) Team
- My team is the best team in this class
- The team of basketball won the competition last month

2.2 ABSTRACT NOUN

Abstract noun is a type of noun that refers to something with which person cannot physically
interact. Abstract noun can be formed from verb, adjective, and common noun.
1. Abstract Noun Formed From Verb
Abstract noun formed from verb followed by “ment” in the end of the verb.
Example:
a) Management
 He worked at management artist since 5 years ago.
 She is very smart to management her time and her money.
b) Argument
 The jury must make a long argument to decided Putra PutriUndiksha
Denpasar 2015.
 The debate contestants make argument to defend their opinion.
c) Judgment
 The judge will make a judgment tomorrow morning.
 My father didn’t give a judgment to accept my urge to climbing mount
Agung.
d) Measurement
 The pharmacist must make a medicine with the exactly measurement.
 Your cloth is have a good measurement with your body.
e) Engagement
 Arya and Della will make an engagement next month.
 We will come to their engagement together.

2. Abstract Noun Formed From Adjective


Abstract noun formed adjective followed by “ness” in the end of the adjective.
Example:
a) Sickness
 Sleep to late every day might cause sickness.
 Smoke can cause sickness for the smoker and also for the other people.
b) Badness
 His badness is annoying his friends when study.
 Consume a drug to forget our problem is the badness idea.
c) Fatness
 She always feels her body to fatness then other.
 Eating a fatty food to much can make our body fatness.
d) Cleanness
 The students must keep cleanness the classroom.
 We always keep cleanness an environment.
e) Consciousness
 She got his consciousness again after 2 days.
 Alcohol can make the people lost their consciousness.

3. Abstract Noun Formed From Common Noun


Example:
a) Childhood
 We spend our childhood in the village.
 She cannot enjoyed her childhood with her friends.
b) Friendship
 I will keep our friendship.
 Our friendship will eternal forever.
c) Championship
 Yogi will participate international championship next week.
 Fajar is the winner of badminton championship in this year.
d) Agency
 He worked at travel agency.
 She applied in insurance agency.
e) Partnership
 They have a lot of partnership in their enterprise
 We are working with our partnership
