Subject Physical Education (Health)

Grade Level 6th

Learning Objective
Energy Balance

6.5 The student will explain the connection between energy

balance and nutrition guidelines, meal planning, and
exercise intensity.
a) Create a one-day meal and snack plan based on
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA), portions,
macronutrients, vitamins, minerals, hydration, sugar,
and salt.
b) Describe the relationship between resting heart rate
and exercise intensity.
c) Explain the impact of physical activity guidelines on
energy expenditure

Online Activity For this activity students will learn about how to design a proper
diet and exercise plan. Students will learn about how heart
health is dependent upon a healthy diet and adequate exercise.
Students will also learn how to estimate the number of calories
burned by exercise and how Body Mass Index (BMI) is
dependent on an individual’s height and weight.

To begin the class the teacher will go over why it is important to

eat a healthy diet and stay active, calories will be defined and
explained. Students will also learn about the importance of
exercise and how it relates to calories. Lastly, students will learn
about heart health and BMI. This will be done through the
teacher presenting a PowerPoint presentation using screen
share capabilities. The presentation will be available for students
to print out and take notes prior to the class. There will also be a
rubric for the simulation activity that will follow the
presentation.

Following the presentation students will be allowed to ask

questions to gain clarity on the topics presented. After questions
have been answered, students will be put into groups for a
break out session. Before they are let into their groups, the
teacher will screen share the simulation activity and show the
students how it is to be used. Once the students are in their
groups, they will designate one person from their group to
access the simulation assigned by the teacher. Once the chosen
student has the simulation pulled up, they will share their screen
with the other group members. Each group will be assigned a
person and a health scenario for that person. The group will
work together to develop a diet plan and exercise regime for
their person that will allow for their health to improve.
Improvements can be either a lower BMI, weight loss or a
decrease in caloric intake. This will be done by imputing the
necessary information into the simulated activity. Students
should reference the presentation for assistance or reach out to
their teacher. The teacher will stay available for the duration of
the class period.

Once the group is satisfied with their diet plan and exercise
regime, one student will type up a summary for the group. The
summary should include details about the exercise regime and
diet plan that they came up with and how it helped to improve
their person’s health. This should be a minimum of one page
and submitted before the beginning of the next class.

Groups that are not able to complete the activity within the
allotted class time will be responsible for working with their
group to have their assignment turned in before the next class
meeting. If issues shall arise, students will be able to contact the
teacher for assistance with any questions or for a possible time
extension.

A sign-up sheet will be provided thru a Google document so that

students are able to sign up for a time slot to present their
results to the class during the next class meeting. Groups will
designate one or two group members that will present their
work. The presenter(s) will be required to give a brief example
of how they utilized the simulation to get their results.
