SUMMARY:
Hapag-Lloyd AG was formed on September 1 1970 as a result of the merger of Hamburg-
Amerikanische Packetfahrt-Actien-Gesellschaft (Hapag) and North German Lloyd (NDL). But
the origins of these shipping lines go back much further: Hapag was founded in Hamburg in
1847 by local merchants and NDL in Bremen in 1857. The lines initially carried mainly
European emigrants eager to start a new life in America. The relationship between Hapag
and NDL was for a long time something special, for while they were competitors, from the
19th century onwards they both repeatedly established joint ventures.

Under its Director-General Albert Ballin (1857-1918), who is also credited with having
invented the cruise, Hapag rose to the top of the world shipping sector around the turn of
the century in terms of tonnage, while NDL became the shipping line carrying the largest
number of passengers. Ballin focused at an early stage on cargo transport in addition to
carrying passengers.

4
World War I caused the loss of their fleets and worldwide liner networks for both
companies. During the 1920s, nevertheless, by cooperating with international partners they
succeeded in rebuilding both very rapidly. After the strains of the world economic crisis had
been endured, World War II once again led to the loss of ocean-going ships and market
positions.

From 1950 Hapag and North German Lloyd’s re-entry into liner shipping was very largely in
the form of jointly operated services. In 1970 Hapag and NDL decided to merge in response
to the rapid growth of container transport that was compelling shipping lines to invest
massively in new ships and containers.

In 2005, Hapag-Lloyd acquired the British-Canadian container line CP Ships, thereby

becoming one of the leading liner shipping companies of the world.

In October 2008 TUI AG sold the majority of the shares of Hapag-Lloyd (56.67%) to the
Albert Ballin consortium consisting of the City of Hamburg, Kühne Holding AG, Signal Iduna,
HSH Nordbank, M.M.Warburg Bank and HanseMerkur. The remaining shares have been
owned by TUI AG.
As at 30 Dec. 2010 49,88% are held by TUI AG and 50,12% by Albert Ballin consortium.

E-COMMERCE SOLUTIONS
TOP EFFICIENCY THROUGH E-COMMERCE

Hapag-Lloyd has the most advanced IT systems in the shipping industry. These systems are
continually enhanced and adapted to meet the changing needs of our customers. Our fully
integrated global network supports all essential functions of container logistics. Transport
data is entered into the system only once, and can then be tracked in real-time from
anywhere in the world. This prevents errors due to duplication, enhances the quality of
service through correct documentation and lowers costs for everyone concerned.

Hapag-Lloyd offers a variety of e-Business solutions for information sharing that are
oriented towards the needs of our customers. Thanks to the extensive e-Business solutions,
they support the efficient processing of relevant data along the entire transport chain.

TRANSPORTATION OF DANGEROUS GOODS

Regulations governing the transport of hazardous goods constantly change and are made
even stricter. This is particularly valid for all traffic concerning the USA.

39
A keynote of Hapag-Lloyd is its high expertise. Hapag-Lloyd's standard for electronic data
processing is regarded as exemplary. The quality of the system used can also be gauged by
the great interest taken in it by other companies.

BENEFITS

 Dangerous goods experts offer you all-encompassing advice.

 Hazardous cargo bookings will be checked by experts in a quick and reliable way.
Legal requirements of all countries and ports related to your transport are taken into
account.
 Ensure a safe transport by observing the proper stowage of your dangerous goods
on board, sometimes going beyond the stowage and segregation requirements of
the IMDG Code when experts find that may be necessary. This gives additional
safety to cargo, the vessel, persons and the environment.
 High level of expertise in the transport chain. You will have well-trained Sales
executives helping you with complicated Dangerous Goods problems.

STOWAGE CONSULTATION
Cargo experts offer their services to ascertain a safe and optimal stowage for all kind of
containerised cargo.

A proper stow is paramount to safe guard against the various strains which may occure
during sea voyage. These are of mechanical, biological or chemical nature and need to be
carefully considered during stowage. The benefit of stuffing cargo safely inside containers
includes smooth transport processing without claims of extra costs, and finally customer
satisfaction.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR AN OPTIMAL STOWAGE

 Strains caused by container transport

 Weight limits of containers
 Weight distribution within containers for heavy items
 Function of packaging
 Cargo securing facilities; Lashing, Bedding and Filling
 Climatic Influences

40
BENEFIT

Doing it right the first time, you will save costs and time for repacking of the cargo and will
ensure its arrival in good order and condition. Hapag Lloyd cargo experts are glad to be of
assistance to any inquiries regarding stowage within a container.

REEFER SOLUTIONS
CUSTOMIZED SOLUTIONS FOR TEMPERATURE-SENSITIVE CARGO

At Hapag-Lloyd we provide professional care for your sensitive refrigerated products to

ensure they keep in good condition and can reach more distant markets through an
extended shelf life.

Hapag-Lloyd  is one of the largest reefer carriers and serves the trade with transport
solutions for a large variety of high quality reefer products. Hapag-Lloyd has a profound
expertise in the transportation of temperature-sensitive products, this includes perishable
cargoes, high value reefer cargoes such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare products and more.

BENEFITS OF HAPAG-LLOYD REEFER

In choosing Hapag-Lloyd as internationally recognized quality carrier you will directly benefit
from our profound expertise in professional handling of temperature-sensitive products.

 Cold

Hapag-Lloyd refrigerated containers can maintain a constant temperature between –

35°C / –31°F and 30°C/ 86°F, even with outside temperatures up to 50°C / 122°F the
refrigerated container technology allows to keep your cargo fresh and deliver best
quality to the destination. You will find the temperature guideline for your product
under temperature controlled cargo (our Reefer Brochure, page 12ff refers).

 Precise

With some fruit, such as bananas, the slightest temperature deviations are decisive
for the quality of the cargo when it reaches its final destination. Therefore, precise
temperatures have the highest technical priority for us. With transportation
temperatures above –10°C /14°F the refrigerated container technology allows to
reduce the maximum variation to 0.5 degrees. For freezer mode, below –10°C /14°F

41
the refrigerated container technology allows to reduce the maximum variation to
one degree only.

 Fresh

For controlled atmosphere we provide technologies such as AFAM+, eAutofresh,

Transfresh, Maxtend or PurFresh. The interior atmosphere is controlled so that
ripening of fruit and flowers can be delayed. Spoiling and mould are suppressed.
Hapag-Lloyd uses a range of technologies. We have the best solution ready for each
and every cargo. You will find further information under Controlled Atmosphere.

 Well ventilated

For certain goods, such as fresh fruit or ferns, a precisely controlled ventilation
system contributes decisively to quality assurance. In Hapag-Lloyd refrigerated
containers up to 280m3 of fresh air per hour can be automatically supplied. The
ventilation flaps can be opened with up to a 72-hour time delay, an important
advantage when the cargo is not sufficiently cooled in advance.

 Dry

Apart from temperature our reefers can also reduce the relative humidity when set
values lie between 65% and 95%. For bulbs Hapag-Lloyd reefers have a special 'bulb
mode’ which automatically provides an optimal atmosphere for transportation.

 Gentle

Our refrigerated containers can be programmed in advance for automatic

temperature change up to eight times during one voyage. This means sensitive cargo
can be gently cooled in stages or the ripening process for fruit can be started before
arriving at the destination

 Environmentally friendly

To protect our environment Hapag-Lloyd continually carries out research into better
solutions with great success. We have reduced average energy consumption by more
than 50% in the last eight years without making compromises on temperature
control, but at the same time improving performance. This reduces your product’s
carbon footprint. Naturally, all coolant used in our reefers is CFC-free.

 Safe and secure

All data relevant to quality, such as temperature, humidity, CO 2 content and fresh air
supplied, are recorded and can be made available if required. With current
technologies, Hapag-Lloyd has also successfully carried out tracking and tracing
trials. For tracking and tracing trial shipments, the location and temperature of the

42
refrigerated container can be made available to the customers along the transport
chain. Pre-Trip Inspections (PTI) are executed prior to every transport in order to
grant highest security and minimized risk.

 Large payload

Use of the most modern materials and refrigeration units ensure lower weight for
our refrigerated containers and higher payload capacity. With Hapag-Lloyd reefers,
customers profit from the highest capacities available, on average 100 to 200
kilograms more, compared to others in the field.

 Reliable

High value, sensitive reefer cargo, from the pharmaceutical, chemical or healthcare
industries requires particularly careful handling by an especially reliable partner.
Here we offer not only our modern equipment and our extensive experience, but
also special internal processes that give extra protection to your high value cargo.

 Fast cooling

Especially powerful refrigeration units assist in pre-cooling processes, in case that

cargoes have not been properly pre-cooled. The considerably faster pull-down times
in Hapag-Lloyd reefers facilitates higher quality of your products.

 Hygienic

Hapag-Lloyd is the only container line to strictly segregate non-food grade boxes
from reefers exclusively used for food transportation. A special interior design
provides more hygienic conditions as well as optimal air circulation. Of course our
boxes are checked and tested before each and every assignment.

CONTROLLED ATMOSPHERE
Why Controlled Atmosphere reefers technology is recommended for sensitive fruits and
vegetables

 After harvesting, fruits and vegetables consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide &
ethylene gas
 Release of moisture and heat generation provide specific challenges
 Process of respiration results in deterioration of the product

43
Purpose of temperature and atmosphere control

 Fruits and vegetables are still “alive” after harvesting

 In a standard reefer container such products start to degrade and deteriorate
immediately
 Fruits and vegetables require an adjusted environment to preserve their condition
 Atmosphere control slows down the ripening process and increases the shelf life of
perishable products
 At Hapag-Lloyd we assist with the following technologies: AFAM+, eAutofresh,
Transfresh, Maxtend and PurFresh

The technologies represent the following specific advantages to prolong shelf life

 Slow down of ripening process and reduce risk of decay

 Decrease of dehydration (no weight loss)
 Extension of market range from harvest to consumption
 Maintenance of freshness, color and condition to maintain product quality
 Prevention / minimization of wastage and financial losses
 Ocean transport to become a viable alternative to airfreight

AFAM+ & EAUTOFRESH REEFER

AFAM+ (Advanced Fresh Air Management) and eAutofresh are Controlled Atmosphere

systems to regulate the oxygen and carbon dioxide level inside the container via the fresh
air vents. This technology takes advantage of natural respiration processes of the fruit or
vegetables and therefore does not require gas injections. Hapag-Lloyd operates one of the
largest AFAM+ & eAutofresh reefer fleet in the market providing cost advantages for our
customers.

 Utilizes a motorized fresh air exchange vent system and features a CO 2 sensor
module
 Controls oxygen and carbon dioxide level and adjusts atmosphere inside the
container by opening/closing the fresh air vents
 Cargo is creating its own atmosphere through respiration
 AFAM+ containers are manufactured by Thermo King
 eAutofresh containers are manufactured by Carrier
 A combined use of  AFAM+ / eAutofresh technology and Transfresh gas injection can
be arranged

44
TRANSFRESH & MAXTEND REEFER

Transfresh and Maxtend fitted containers describe a special supplement for reefer
containers. They create a tailor-made atmosphere via gas injections. An additional controller
is monitoring & recording the atmospheric composition inside the reefer. Such “Controlled
Atmosphere” containers are ideal for products such as flowers, vegetables and fruits.

 Steered by supplemental micro-processor placed inside the container

 Controller is constantly monitoring oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen
concentrations
 Desired atmosphere is created and controlled by injection of suitable gas-mix in
combination with vent regulation
 Tectrol technology is manufactured by Transfresh
 Maxtend technology is manufactured by Mitsubishi Australia Limited

REEFER CARGO HANDLING

Hapag-Lloyd container depots ensure that reefer boxes are clean and in sound condition
upon release for a new transport.

In the interest of exercising best cargo care, we appreciate observation of following

recommendations:

Prior to stuffing

 Ensure only clean reefer container is accepted from depot

 Observe the use of adequate packaging material
 Keep in mind plastic wrapping may act as vapor barrier and prevent air circulation
around the product
 Ensure your product temperature reflects transport temperature before stuffing
commences
 Your reefer cargo should preferably be sourced from a refrigerated loading bay

Stuffing of reefer containers

 Switch off the power-unit during loading operation, to avoid ambient air exchange.
 Ensure product is evenly stuffed in correct manner to avoid obstructions that can
result in hot spots
 Do not stack boxes above load line; spacers will help to stabilize cargo and
ensure optimal airflow
 Avoid poor air circulation which is amongst primary causes of product deterioration

45
 Any free floor area and gaps may not exceed 5% of floor area to avoid negative
impact on airflow
 Use board or dunnage material to avoid gaps and open floor areas
 Do not load cargo beyond surface provided by  „T-Bar“ flooring inside the container
 To ensure free airflow, no space between cargo units permitted in front of unit air
distribution point
 Adequate refrigeration relies on good air circulation around your entire load

Completing loading operation

 Close doors properly

 Ensure correct set point for carrying temperature, humidity and setting of air
ventilation
 Start up reefer power-unit

CUSTOMS CLEARANCE
Customs formalities for imports and exports of goods are regulated on a uniform basis in
Europe. Nevertheless, different documents must be produced for the various customs
procedures. The correct preparation of the documents is very important, because, after all,
significant customs duties and taxes are involved that you would be required to settle.

Hapag-Lloyd assists you with customs clearance.

this service is our way of assuring you that nothing is left to chance.

Packaging

DHL Express offers its customers standard DHL-branded packaging items completely free of charge,
such as envelopes, small boxes and flyers.
A payable range of standard DHL-branded packaging is also available to our customers, such as
larger boxes and triangular tubes, ideal for sending heavier goods.

Controlled Packaging for sending diagnostic specimens. When required, dry ice supplies are also
available in most countries.

Non-standard Shipments

DHL Express has a service to satisfy shipments of all shapes and sizes. When your shipment is
overweight, is outside of accepted dimensions, or requires dedicated handling due to its contents.

Dangerous Goods

For sending express shipments, DHL Express is certified in certain classes of Dangerous Goods in
accordance with IATA and ADR regulations.

Non standard pickups & delivery

Not enough hours in the day? DHL Express offers a number of pickup and delivery options for when
the business day just isn’t long enough. Whether it’s outside of normal business hours, during the
weekend, a public holiday, a pickup from or delivery to a remote address, your local DHL Express
office will be able to find a solution.

Delivery Notification

When you need extra peace of mind that your shipment has been delivered, DHL Express can
provide a proactive confirmation by fax, email, phone or SMS, whichever is more convenient for you.

Proof of Delivery

67
DHL Express can arrange for a hard copy of the Receiver’s signature to verify delivery of a shipment.
The proof of delivery is sent via fax or email back to the Sender and is an ideal option for customers
without internet access.

Repeat Delivery Attempt

When the Receiver is not at the address given on the waybill, DHL will arrange for repeat delivery
attempts until the shipment is successfully delivered for you.

Remote Area Service

If you need to send a parcel to a remote address anywhere in the world, DHL Express will meet the
challenge. Thanks to our extensive network, DHL can help you reach customers and suppliers even in
rural or difficult to access locations.

Hold for collection

At times, it can be much easier to have your customer collect shipments from a DHL Express facility,
rather than attempt a delivery to an uncertain address. Simply request the option at the time of
booking or shipment pickup and our Customer Service staff at destination will notify the recipient
when the shipment is ready to collect.

GoGreen

GOGREEN is an all-inclusive carbon neutral transportation service available for account customers. It
comprises the calculation of CO2 of every shipment, the offsetting of CO2 emissions through DHL’s

If you have a DHL shipment that cannot be delivered to your customer for an unexpected reason,
DHL Express can arrange to hold the shipment for up to 7 calendar days free of charge.

Payment & Billing Options

DHL Express offers its customers flexible payment and billing options for shipment transport charges,
duties and taxes. This flexibility gives the freedom to invoice the Sender, Receiver or Third Party.

 Import Express
An Import Express billing account allows you to control all of your inbound shipments
through a single account number with all shipments shown on just one single invoice.
Read more about our Import Services

 Duties & Taxes Paid

This service allows duties and taxes to be charged to the Sender or nominated third party.
DHL will clear the shipment at destination, pay customs charges, and invoice the duties and
taxes to the account specified on the waybill. This enables the Sender to sell goods on an all-
inclusive price basis. DHL Express then invoices the Sender for the administration of this
service as well as the duties and taxes incurred at destination.

 Neutral Delivery

68
Neutral Delivery allows the Sender to send a dutiable shipment to the Receiver, with the
duties and taxes invoiced to a third party or importer of record. To maintain confidentiality
for the Sender, the shipment documentation doesn’t reveal the value of the goods to the
Receiver.

 Prepaid Cards
In order to offer its customer a choice of payment and trading options, DHL Express offers a
Prepaid Card solution for customers in India which is based on advance payment option.

Benefits of Prepaid Cards:

 Prepaid Card is a convenient option for SME customers; which offers great savings.
 With an advance payment of a certain amount (based on denominations available), the
customer gets the flexibility of shipping for the next one year.
 Customer can avail of up to 25% cost savings on the shipping value entitled.
 The Card offers a facility of refills/ top-ups to facilitate continuous trading.
 The Prepaid Card can be purchased and used at any of our DHL Service Points.
