Code Description

Fault Code 73 is used for several faults.

When used with Engine Synchronous Shift (ESS) system on diesel engines, code indicates a
fault was detected by ECM by input from shift knob or Neutral Switch. It also indicates limits for
maximum air inlet restriction have been exceeded . See Fig 1 through Fig 3.
In a gas-fueled engine, code is for gas valve position fault.

Effect

Testing

For diagnosis diesel engines, determine SAE code . For diagnosis gas engines, inspect switch light
status .

Determine SAE Code

Connect scan tool. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Record stored codes.

If codes 226/11 or 151/14 are stored, inspect switch light status .

If code 227 is stored, and codes 226/11 or 151/14 aren't stored, inspect for open .
If code 107/0 is stored, air filter restriction high .

Air Filter Restriction High

Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect DT (diagnostic tool). Read ECM software level (under
engine configuration).

If ECM software is level less than 29.00, reprogram ECM.

If ECM software level is 29.00 or higher, service air inlet system - change air filter.

Inspect Switch Light Status

See appropriate WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.

1. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Connect scan tool. Select SWITCH LIGHT STATUS.

2. Move transmission shift lever to neutral position; then shift into gear.
1. If switch light status changes when transmission is in gear vs neutral (in neutral
Status=ON), and if scan tool BREAK TORQUE, SYSTEM SW and SHIFT INTENT status
change (ON/OFF) when positions are changed, then condition is corrected. Road test
vehicle and return to service. This could be an intermittent problem.
2. If switch light status does not change when transmission is in gear vs in neutral, and if scan
tool BREAK TORQUE, SYSTEM SW and SHIFT INTENT status do not change (ON/OFF)
when switch positions are changed, test in-gear and in-neutral wiring .

In-Gear And In-Neutral Wiring Test

1. Locate in-gear and in-neutral switch at transmission. Disconnect 4-pin connector.

2. Install fused jumper wire between terminals A-B. Turn ignition switch to ON position.

3. Connect scan tool. Find in-gear and in-neutral terminal assignments.

4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect vehicle 30-pin connector.

5. Measure resistance between in-neutral terminal and ground.

1. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, inspect neutral switch .
2. If resistance exceeds 5 ohms, input wire is open. Repair open and test operation .

Inspect Neutral Switch

1. Place fused jumper wire at 4-pin connector and place it between D-C terminals.

2. Measure resistance between in-gear terminal and ground.

1. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, replace switch. (A Rockwell component.) Test operation .
2. If resistance exceeds 5 ohms, repair open circuit. Test operation .

6/11/2018 Printer Friendly View

Inspect For Open

1. Disconnect 2-pin connector at shift knob. Disconnect vehicle harness 30-pin connector.

2. Install a fused jumper wire between 2-pin connector terminals A-B. Measure resistance between
terminal A3-D3 at 30-pin connector.
1. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, inspect for short .
2. If resistance exceeds 5 ohms, one or both of input wires are open. Repair open circuit. Test
operation .

Inspect For Short

Remove fused jumper wire. Measure resistance between terminal A3-D3.

If reading is less than 10,000 ohms, wires are shorted to each other. Repair and test
operation .
If reading exceeds 10,000 ohms, test sae codes 227/2, 227/3, 227/4, shift knob .

SAE Codes 227/2, 227/3, 227/4, Shift Knob Test

Plug 2-pin connector back in, and proceed as follows.

1. Place shift knob system to ON. Set shift intent switch to: Position 2, Break Torque-Up.

2. Disconnect vehicle interface connector. Measure resistance between terminal A3-D3 of vehicle
connector.
1. If reading is between 42,000 and 45,000 ohms, test shift knob .
2. If reading isn't between 42,000 and 45,000 ohms, replace shift knob assembly. (A Rockwell
component.) Test operation .

Shift Knob Test (Part 1)

1. Set shift knob switch to ON. Set shift intent switch to: Position 4, Break Torque-Down.

2. Measure resistance between terminal A3-D3 of vehicle connector.

1. If reading is between 9,000 and 11,000 ohms, test shift knob (part 2) .
2. Test operation .

Shift Knob Test (Part 2)

1. Set shift knob switch to OFF. Set shift intent switch to Position 1 (Upshift).

2. Measure resistance between terminal A3-D3 of vehicle connector.

1. If reading is between 124,000 and 128,000 ohms, shift knob test (part 3) .
2. If reading is not 124,000-128,000 ohms, replace shift knob assembly (Rockwell
component). Test operation .

Shift Knob Test (Part 3)

1. Set shift knob switch to OFF, DOWN INTENT. Set shift intent switch to: Position 2 (DOWN).

2. Measure resistance between terminal A3-D3 of vehicle connector.

1. If resistance is 91,000-95,000 ohms, replace ECM. Test operation .
2. If resistance isn't 91,000-95,000 ohms, replace shift knob assembly (Rockwell component).
Test operation .

Test Operation

1. Reconnect any connections disconnected during diagnosis.

2. Perform vehicle road test and check all functions of ESS system.
