LESSON OVERVIEW 2

45 Minute Lesson Plan Overview

6th Grade Alaska State Standard Mathematics:

Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

 6.G.1. Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons

by composing or decomposing into other polygons (e.g., rectangles and triangles). Apply

these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Objective: Students by the end of this lesson will be able to take notes and practice using

those notes on finding the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals,

and polygons by composing or decomposing into other polygons (e.g., rectangles and

triangles).

Summary of Lesson: In order for students to be successful on this lesson they must

have the prior knowledge of finding area and perimeter on geometric shapes. As a

refresher and introduction to finding the area of irregular polygons, the students will be

making graphic organizer foldables on how to find the area of these different shapes. This

will take about 20 minutes. On the foldable notes will be the a drawing of the shape,

important parts to define on the shape, the formula of the area of shape, an example of

how to solve area of that shape, and three examples of how to find the area of abnormal

polygons using those foundational area formulas. The next step to this lesson is having

the students go around the classroom, where there will be large sized polygons taped on

the floor that they will have to practiced solving the area with their foldable notes. This is

a fun way for students to get comfortable at finding the area of irregular shapes. Since

this is a beginning lesson or start of a major math unit, as we get further along with this

math concept, we will use real world situations of why it is important to know how to

find the area of abnormal polygons. This will take 20 minutes of the lesson. I did area in a

large scale so that students have to move around and be active. I think a fun final project

would be to have my students find the area of a layout of a house or mall. This project

will also have the students use problem solving skills and strategies.

Differentiated Instruction: For my students who have special needs I will make

accommodations based on their IEPs. Some general ideas to help them succeed with this

lesson is pairing them with a helper student such as an advanced learner who can help

them learn by answer the student’s questions. Another accommodation I might use is

printing out more detailed visual notes for students who struggle with reading or need

further help. I could also give students extra time if they need it so they do not feel

rushed. The last general accommodation I would make for my students is to have written

directions that are clear and simple where they can easily read them, so they do not get

lost or off track.

Examples of what lesson will look like and incorporate:
