Different hats, same person

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” These are the letters dancing in my paper.
It made me contemplate on what I wanted to be. “I want to become just like mom,” I thought to
myself. “Teacher.” That was what I wrote remembering that mom was an English teacher. On the
first day of school, I stood in front of Katipunan Hall, holding on to that memory as I stride to my
first Education class.

The College of Education is a center of excellence. It is home to a lot of success stories.

That is why I enrolled and started my journey as an Education student. True enough, Education
became a gateway of opportunities for me.

My Education class was ED 11 with Dr. Elve Nasvik as our instructor. We focused on the
different child development theories that will aid us as educators. We had a lot of different
activities and we were able to learn and have fun simultaneously.

Nature vs. Nurture
During the first semester, we already had Field Study, where we observed seasoned
teachers as they conduct their classes and learn from their classroom management and teaching
strategies. I was happy to be able to complete my 18 hours of duty and was more delighted to know
I was among the top three students who had the best Field Study workbook.

Hibalag is an event every Sillimanian has to experience. I did so by participating in the

dance for Parada Sillimaniana. Unfortunately, because of the heavy pouring, the Committee on
Student Organizations (ComSO) decided not to continue the parade; so, we were not able to present
the dance we rehearsed. I also joined the Silliman University Student Government Spiritual Life
Committee as a member of the Secretariat sub-committee.

When I was in Senior High School, I had an Oral Communication class which became an
immersion class for Korean students. I remember what an exhilarating experience it was, that is
why when I became a college student, I grabbed the opportunity to become a full-fledged buddy.
I joined the Intensive English Program (INTEP) of the English department and became a buddy to
Hikaru, a Japanese student, and Yerem, a Korean student.

I thought my duty as a buddy ends come graduation time. But I was asked by Mr. John
Rubio, head of the buddy pool, to be one of the hosts for the graduation of our Korean students at
no less than the historic Silliman Hall.

I chose Literacy Training Service for National Service Training Program which requires
every first-year student to choose a program that will serve the country. LTS complements my
chosen course and tutoring will help me as a future teacher. It filled my heart seeing my tutee read
and answer the questionnaires. Her enthusiasm and willingness to learn deeply inspired me.

I have been juggling my time with my scholastic endeavors and being a student assistant.
I started being a student assistant at the Main Library way back senior high school. This helped
me enhance useful skills such as managing my time effectively, working with others harmoniously
among others. It also helped me pay a portion of my tuition as my way of helping my parents.

I was given the opportunity to serve the studentry of the College of Education by running
the Assistant Secretary position of the Leaders Imparting Knowledge and Excellence (LIKE
Party). Unfortunately, the election was postponed. However things turn out, I am simply enthralled
to have been offered this coveted opportunity.

Before the school year ended, I got a letter stating that I was a Class Honor. My efforts,
mostly time-consuming and excruciating, have paid off. I was beaming whilst giving the letter to
my mother; knowing her hard labor bear fruit. My family has always been my motivation and
inspiration in everything that I do, that is why I dedicate this award to them.

Because of the College of Education, I realized that a teacher is not only a teacher. A
teacher is a buddy, dancer, host, poet, parent, counselor, helper, confidant, and friend. They are all
these people rolled into one. Teachers wear different hats at different times for different people.
Someday, I am going to wear different hats at different times for different people. I hope I will still
be the same person but I know if I put that hat on the head, it will be life-altering and I will never
be the same again.

I am now a Second-Year student and I am proud of how long I’ve come, even if it just
seems like it was yesterday when I embarked on the endeavor of teacher training. I am happily
anticipating on the things that will unfold as I continue on my journey in the College of Education.
