Automatic Transmission Systems
Traffic is getting heavier. More powerful engines and the aspi-
ration for greater efficiency in freight transport - modern traffic
places ever increasing demands on people and materials. ZF
automatic transmissions are today’s answer to changing con-
ditions.

TC Tronic: Driveline Technology
for Heavy Tractors
Heavy tractors in action. The mere sight of them and listening to the
roar of their engines is enough to give you an idea of their power.
Large, ultra-heavy loads are moved from one place to another by
using high-torque drives. To make sure that the enormous forces
of the electronically controlled diesel engines are transmitted with
precision, the TC Tronic automatic transmission system is available
with a torque converter clutch. This allows heavy tractors to drive off
smoothly.

Ecomat: Safe, Economical, and
Comfort-Enhancing
Be it fire trucks or municipal vehicles: The Ecomat 6-speed auto-
matic transmission is the ideal supplement at the driveline end.
In comparison to the 5-speed transmission, it has two important
advantages: better tractive power and maximum driving speed at
lower engine speeds and use of the torque converter.

contributes to minimizing vibrations. In addition, the

Concept Transmission
For decades, transmission systems from ZF have been setting the stan-
dard in driveline technology for modern commercial vehicles. The require-
ments always emerge from the markets. The innovations are created with
the determination of finding optimal solutions. The next step to optimize
goods transport is called ‘Concept Transmission’.

Manual Transmissions
We continuously improve tried-and-trusted systems. ZF manual
transmissions represent custom-made truck driving: With five, six,
nine, twelve or sixteen gears, they are perfectly adjusted to the
performance range of modern commercial vehicles. Hills and val-
leys, stop and go, acceleration – they transmit the right torque for
every situation in all kinds of trucks. These robust transmissions
are characterized by extremely quiet running and optimal gear
spacing. They have long since proven their economic viability. Low
fuel consumption and minimal maintenance guarantee efficient
operation.
16
The constant further development of all manual transmission ranges
and the use of improved materials and processing technologies en-
sure that ZF’s manual transmissions are always state-of-the-art. They
live up to the challenges of powerful engines and heavy vehicles. At
the same time, efficiency and ecology are equally important criteria
for product development at ZF. Automotive manufacturers are equally
interested in weight reduction and compact dimensions as they are
in simple installation of the transmissions.

Ecosplit: Driveline Technology for
Heavy Trucks
Transporting heavy loads to their destination quickly, safely, and
economically. Doing a good job also in difficult terrain, off the
road. To achieve this, commercial vehicles need a powerful engine
and a transmission which transfers power with precision: Ecosplit.
With the light transmission version featuring twelve gear steps,
long-distance truck drivers are able to always achieve the optimum
output with all engines – when starting, accelerating, and making
headway. With sixteen gear steps, the Ecosplit manual transmission
shows its strength also in off-road applications. The gear spreading
is specifically adjusted to construction and special vehicle require-
ments.

Ecomid: Driveline Technology
for Medium Trucks
Quickly transporting goods to another city, maneuvering in a pe-
destrian zone with heavy load. Collecting garbage in residential
areas. Doing hard work on a construction site, or reliably clearing
snow in the winter. Equipped with the Ecomid manual transmis-
sion system, vehicles have proven successful in long-distance traf-
fic, are used in a various applications as delivery and municipal
vehicles – and work very efficiently in all of these tasks. All around
the globe, medium trucks with Ecomid transmissions show off their
wide range of possibilities.

Ecolite: Driveline Technology
for Light Trucks
It is impossible to imagine our daily lives without them. Light com-
mercial vehicles and light trucks guarantee that we are supplied
with the necessities of life – everything from our breakfast rolls to
newspapers. Their services are irreplaceable particularly in metro-
politan areas where traffic is dense. These environments call for
low-maintenance vehicles which can be used flexibly, are easy to
operate, and feature low operating costs.

Intarder: Safe Braking
Efficiency and economy count when transporting goods. Engine
and transmission have to be suitable for the job. Safety is equally
important. The brakes have to work just as well as the engine! To
protect the brakes from fading due to long-term stress, secondary
retarders handle much of the work (80 to 90 percent).
This means that the service brakes stay cool and are ready for use
where necessary. In contrast to retarders made by other manufac-
turers, the Intarder is integrated in the transmission. Gentle brake
modulation is made possible by five brake levels. Its compact de-
sign hardly changes the transmission dimensions at all.

ZF Power Take-Offs:
More Than Just Driving
Commercial vehicles with ZF power take-offs (PTOs) have special
capabilities. The PTOs turn them into true specialists for specific
tasks which can be performed while driving or parked. They can
collect garbage, clean sewage systems, clean streets, clear the
snow, mow slopes, mix and pump concrete, or lift and dump heavy
loads. Those are just a few of the many possibilities.

Innovative Driving:
With ZF Hybrid Technology
Future driveline technology must strike a balance between eco-
nomic and ecological requirements. Just like the hybrid concepts
offered by ZF. For trucks, ZF relies on parallel hybrid systems
where combustion engine and electric motor are arranged in paral-
lel and controlled via the transmission. They can be implemented
in an economically feasible way – integrated into existing vehicle
concepts as an alternative to manual or automatic transmissions.
