Well as you may know my name is Samantha Martinez. Although I was born and
raised her in Utah, my whole family is from Venezuela, and I think that’s very
important to my identity. My musical background is that I have been playing
guitar for 5 years as well as the ukulele. I was apart of the the Music Recording
Technology program here at SLCC but left because I wanted to persue more of
the music business aspect of the music industry.
Personal

On this slide you can see some of my all time favorite artists of all time. Top row
beginning on the left side it goes Tame Impala, Rihanna, J. Cole, and DPR Live. On
the bottom row starting on the left side its Ariana Grande, Frank Ocean, and BTS. All
these artists are apart of different musical cultures, like Frank Ocean and Rihanna are
both apart of RnB, but BTS is apart of K-Pop. My musical background my parents had
me listen to all kinds of songs from all kinds of genres from all kinds of different
decades. My favorite artists change and go, so currently these are the ones I’m
obsessed with at the moment. Although there is this one certain group that is always
on my top favorites, and that’s the Beatles.

Eleanor Rigby was recorded on the 28 and 29th of April and on the 6th of June in
1966. It was released on their album Revolver on August 5th, 1966. Paul McCartney
wrote this song after coming up with the lyrics “picks up a rice in a church where a
wedding has been.” He created Eleanor Rigby as the main protagonist in this “story”
(https://societyofrock.com/what-happened-when-beatlemania-ended/). This song is
known as an “ode to all the lonely people” for those who can relate to Eleanor Rigby
and Father McKenzie in this song
(http://dspace.unive.it/bitstream/handle/10579/5791/828067-1184580.pdf?sequence=
2). What made me discover this song was I think either elementary or middle school
we read the book “The Wednesday Wars” by Gary D. Schmidt, which was about a
student who had to stay after class with their teacher every wednesday. This book
takes place during the Vietnam war. A part in the book, the main character’s sister
was against a war and became a “hippie” and there is a part where she is in her room
blasting this song. That’s what made me interested into hearing this song, and this
become of one my favorite Beatles song.

- Paul McCartney Performance

Hey Jude was recorded on the 31st of July and the 1st of August in 1968. This song was
released as a non-album single on August 26, 1968.
This was the band’s first song released under their new record label “Apple.” Paul
McCartney wrote this song, first titling “Hey Jules”, to John Lennon’s son, Julian Lennon,
to comfort him about his parents, John and Cynthia’s divorce (Womack, Kenneth (2014). The
Beatles Encyclopedia: Everything Fab Four. Santa Barbara, CA: ABC-CLIO.). I’m honestly not
too sure which performance it was but I remember years ago, when I heard this song for
the first time, my dad was watching a performance of Paul McCartney singing this song. I
always was so confused on why it never stopped. Now older I really understand and
appreciate the meaning. I tried finding the exact performance of him singing this song but
I can’t really remember which one it is. Also for the Listening guide, I listened to the
shortened version.

Here Comes the Sun

- Recorded on July 7 - August 19, 1969

- Released on September 26, 1969 on their album Abbey Road
- Written by George Harrison
- In response for dark mood surrounding the Beatles
- Best song to ever exist

This song was recorded on July 7 through August 19 in 1969. It was released on their
album Abbey Road on September 26, 1969. Although this being my favorite song, I
never knew that George Harrison wrote it. George decided to go to his friend’s house
instead of going to the label. He felt like he was draining due to all the business they
had to do, so when he was able to take a break from that, he felt relieved
(https://archive.org/details/harrison00fine/page/n247/mode/2up). In his autobiography,
“I, Me, Mine”, he explained how the joy to be out of the label felt like spring was soon
to come, and he wrote “Here Comes The Sun” in his friend’s garden .(Harrison,
George (2002) [1980]. I, Me, Mine. San Francisco, CA: Chronicle Books).
This song is honestly probably my favorite song of all time. I can’t even remember the
first time I heard this song, I felt like this song has always been apart of my life
somehow
