6. Use the graphical method to solve the following LPP.

Maximize Z = 7X1+3X2
Subject to constraints
X1+2X2≥ 3
X1+X2≤ 4
0 ≤ X1≤ 5/2
0 ≤X2≤ 3/2
And
X1,X2≥ 0

Solution

OBJECTIVE FUNCTION

Max Z= 7X1+3X2

Subject to constraints

X1+2X2 ≥ 3………..equation 1
X1+X2 ≤ 4………….equation 2
X1, X2≥ 0 (Non-negative constraints)
Converting inequalities Into equalities

From equation 1, From equation 2,

-X1 -2X2 ≤ -3 X1+X2 =4
IF X1=0, IF X1=0,
-2X2=-3 X2=4
X2=-3/-2=1.5 Cordinates=(0,4)
Cordinates= (0,1.5)
And If X2=0,
X1=4
And, IF X2=0, Cordinates=(4,0)
X1=3
Cordinates=(3,0)
Graphical representation,

Feasible region is ABCD

A(0,0), B(0,1.5), C(0.75,1.5), D(1.5,0)

Evaluation of objective function

Points coordinates Objective function Value of Z
7X1+3X2
A (0,0) 7*0+3*0 0
B (0,1.5) 7*0+1.5*3 4.5
C (0.75,1.5) 7*0.75+3*1.5 9.75
D (1.5,0) 7*1.5+ 3*0 10.5

Therefore, Z is maximum at D(1.5,0)

10. A company has factories at F1, F2 and F3 that supply products to warehouse at W1, W2
and W3. The weekly capacities of the factories are 190,185 and 125 units, respectively. The
weekly warehouse requirements are 200,130 and 170 units, respectively. The unit shipping
costs(in rupees) are as follows :

Warehouse
W1 W2 W3 Supply
F1 20 24 16 190
F2 18 12 22 185
Factory F3 30 28 20 125
Demand 200 130 170 500
Determine the Optimal distribution for this company in order to minimize its total
shipping cost.

Solution

A. NWC method
W1 W2 W3 Supply
F1 20 24 16 190
190
F2 18 12 22 185
10 130 45
F3 30 28 20 125
125
Deman 200 130 170 500
d

Number of allocated cells=M+N-1=3+3-1=5

Therefore, Total cost= (20*190)+(18*10)+(12*130)+(22*45)+(20*125)=9030

B. Least-cost method:
W1 W2 W3 Supply
F1 20 24 16 190
20 170
F2 18 12 22 185
55 130
F3 30 28 20 125
125
Demand 200 130 170 500

Number of allocated cells=M+N-1=3+3-1=5

Therefore, Total cost= (20*20)+(16*170)+(18*55)+(12*130)+(30*125)=9420

C. Vogel’s approximation method

W1 W2 W3 Supply Pv Pv Pv
F1 20 24 16 190 4 4 4
145 45
F2 18 12 22 185 6 4 4
55 130
F3 30 28 20 125 8 _
125 10→
Demand 200 130 170 500
Pv 2 12↑ 4
Pv 2 _ 4
Pv 4 _ 6↑
Pv 2 _ _

Number of allocated cells=M+N-1=3+3-1=5

Total cost=(20*145)+(18*55)+(16*45)+(12*130)+(20*125)=8670

D. MODI(Modified Distribution
W1 W2 W3 Supply
F1 20 24 16 190 U1=20
+ -
20 170
F2 18 12 22 185 U2=18
55 130
F3 30 28 20 125 U3=30
- +
125
Demand 200 130 170 500
V1=0 V2=-6 V3=-4

Calculating opportunity cost(unallocated cells)

F1W2=C-(U+V)=24-(20+(-6))=10

F1W3=22-(18+(-4))= 8

F3W1=28-(-6+30) =4

F3W2=20-(-4+30)= -6

20 24 16 U1=20
145 45
18 12 22 U2=18
50 130
30 28 20 U3=24
125
V1=0 V2=-6 V3=-4

Calculating opportunity cost(unallocated cells)

F1W2=24-(20-6)=10 Since, all the values are positive the optiomal solution has been

F2W3=22-(18-4)=8 reached.

F3W1=30-(-6+24)=10

F3W2=28-(24+0) = 6

Least cost=20*145+18*55+12*130+16*45+20*125

=8670
