•  Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, second-generation
Jewish immigration from the eastern Europe
•  In 1948 he started taking art classes with
Vincent Taylor in a studio, and in high school
he took evening classes at the art academy of
Cincinnati
•  Dine finally got his fine arts degree at Ohio
University in Athens, Ohio

•  1958 he moved to New York with
his bride Nancy Minto, dine made
a living teaching a high school
art class!

•  Dine’s first momentous exposure to the New
York art world came in 1959, Dine, Claes
Oldenburg and Marc Racliff, opened the Judson
Gallery in the Judson Memorial Church with a
group exhibition.
•  That same year he joined the Reuben Gallery,
which also showed the work of Red Grooms,
Allan Kaprow, Claes Oldenburg and George Segal.

•  Jim Dine has done paintings, sculptures, and
prints in additional to his bigger pieces like
performances and stage set designs
•  One example of a sculpture he made was The
Pinocchio

•  dine has made two big black hearts
at the DeCordova Museum
•  From the 1970’s-1980’s he had a
apparent shift in his subject of his
art, from man made objects to
nature

•  Most of his art work has bright
colors that pops out so everyone
can notice his art.
•  He also draws robes.
•  He draws flowers.
•  Some things he also does stage
designing.

The picture you will be seeing next
is a sculpture he has made and is
located around our area in Grand
Rapids, at the Frederik Meijer
gardens. It’s a skull that’s made out
of bronze, and do you think the
boat oars are all made of wood or
tractor tires? It’s actually made
out of hard metal.

I chose this artist because his work inspires
me and I like how he mainly draws hearts and
skulls. I feel that the hearts represents the way
he has love and passion for his artistic abilities.
