When talking about health-related experiences it is easy for me to pick one out. It would
have to be the time I got MRSA. The antibiotic resistant form of staph infection led me on a life
changing experience on seeking medical attention, recovery, and educating myself. There are
many things I look back on during that time that I should have paid more attention to. It started
as a bump on my elbow that quickly turned into painful swelling. I decided to wait a day before
going to see my doctor. That was my first mistake. I should have taken that pain as a sign of
urgency and gone into the emergency room. Because of that, the infection grew. It was my sister,
who is a nurse, who told me to go into the emergency room to have it checked. Once at the
hospital, I was put under, received surgery on my arm, and was driven home. It was a few days
later that my results came in and I received a MRSA diagnosis. I did not realise how dangerous
MRSA was until I received a frantic phone call from the hospital staff member urging me to get
to the hospital as soon as possible. I would spend the next 6-8 weeks with an IV bag on my
person. I would also educate myself during this time on why that phone call was so frantic. I
learned about the resistance of MRSA and how easily it could have ended my life. The most
frightening point being how it could have led to Endocarditis and stopped my heart. Thankfully,
I would have a complete recovery with nothing more than a mark on my arm. As time went on
after my recovery I read more about the origins of MRSA and began a journey down a rabbit
hole about subjects such as antibiotic resistance, Penicillin, and even antibiotics in agriculture. Its
deepened my appreciation for biology and the medical field. I have always been interested in the
medical field but having personal experiences to draw from only deepens my appreciation for it.
