JOURNAL #7, SL LUBRANO

In the article of Alfred Lubrano entitled “The Shock of Education: How College

Corrupts” discusses the realty in getting into the higher education. He narrated his experience

with college education and how it made him realize that distance from parents would lead to

better learning.

He explains that “working class” went through the motions during school to conform and

finish it without considering their preparation to higher level. What matters to them is to start

working for a living to satisfy their short term wants and desires, disregarding the opportunities

in the future that lied ahead. He clams that if a student is farther from his family, it is more likely

that the student would succeed in college. Based on my experience, Lubrano;s claim is sensible.

During my college days, the fact that I was far from my family provided me enough time for my

studies and it also taught me things that helped me to be independent.

Somehow, college education influences the mindset of a working class, in a way that it

replaces the priorities from family and friends to self- fulfillment and pursuit of knowledge. I

find Lubrano’s claim sensible, for the reason that it is being experienced by the majority of the

students who are distant from their family.
