Respiration Classwork

1. Oxidative Phosphorylation is the process that produces ATP using enzymes and oxygen. It is

the last stage of aerobic respiration.

Photophosphorylation is the process of ATP production using sunlight during the

photosynthesis.

Molecular oxygen and glucose are the energy sources of oxidative phosphorylation.

Sunlight is the energy source of photophosphorylation.

Similarities:

 Both processes are important in energy transfer within the living system.

 Both involved in the utilization of redox intermediates.

 In both processes, the production of a proton motive force leads to the transfer of

H+ ions across the membrane

2. Glycolysis-Glycolysis – the splitting of the 6- carbon glucose molecule into two 3-carbon

pyruvate molecules.. Glycolysis takes place in the cytoplasm of a cell as the first step in

cellular respiration of the Kreb’s cycle. When glycolysis occurs, it breaks down glucose into

pyruvic acids in the cytoplasm.

3.

A. ) The equation does not state the sites of cellular respiration.

B. The equation does not state how much ATP molecules are produced at the end of each

process.

C. The equation does not include the numerous enzymes, coenzymes and intermolecular

chemicals involved in cellular respiration.

D. The equation shows the conversion of glucose and oxygen to carbon dioxide and water as

a simple one step process.
