An essay is, generally, a piece of writing that expresses information as well as the
writer’s opinion. Writing an essay means adjusting a logical set of ideas into an
argument. Because essays are essentially linear, i.e. they offer one idea at a time,
they must present their ideas in the order that makes most sense to a reader.
Successfully structuring an essay means attending to a reader’s logic. The focus
of such an essay predicts its structure. It dictates the information readers need to
know and the order in which they need to receive it. Thus, your essay’s structure
is necessarily unique to the main claim you are making. Although there are many
types of essay e.g. descriptive, narrative, argumentative etc. Yet there are no set
formulas for writing an essay, apart from structuring the core and having a sense
of direction. Firstly, introduction is usually the foundation of the essay which
includes three main points that will be elaborated in the essay, keeping it simple
and short. The thesis statement i.e. the end of the first paragraph, should be able
to captivate the attention of the reader and keep them engaged. The introduction
allows the reader to know what topic would be discussed further in the essay,
hence keeping up a sense of intrigue. There will be five paragraphs in an essay.
The first point will be elaborately detailed in the second paragraph. The second
point will be discussed extensively in the third paragraph. The fourth paragraph
will talk about the third point in detail. And lastly, to wrap up the essay, a
conclusion is formed. A conclusion is what you leave your reader with,
summarizing everything you have mentioned in the introduction and giving them
closure. It shows how you have proven your thesis and shows the reader that you
have accomplished what you were meant to do. By following these guidelines on
writing an essay, you can write something worthwhile by keeping it structured.
