Reflection

The field of teaching I am interested in is special education all levels. With that I choose

videos in all grade levels, as to get a better understanding of teaching at different levels. The

videos I watched are as follows: “ 100 Days of reading”, “K-5 Density and Pressure”, Grade 6-8

Art/ Student Role”,” HS Mathematical Modeling”, and “Reader Response: Keith Gilyard and

Mourning Dove”. These videos had a lot of great points on having to teach lessons in other ways

other than paper lessons, getting students to explain their reasoning, importance of peers, bring

culture into a lesson, and teaching at different learning levels.

I really enjoyed the assignments that are more project based other than just paper

assignments. I feel like you get a better understanding of if your students grasped a concept,

since these assignments take your students to the next level of thinking. In the video, “Reader

Response” both teachers gave projects that went with the readings. The student had to make a

visual representation of what they thought a group of poemes ment from the terms they came up

with. Then the other class came up with stores like “Mourning Dove” and the students really got

involved. I would like to use projects to check for understanding of concepts. I go to see how to

do this in other subjects other than English. I got to see this be done in math, and sciences.

Students reasoning on how they came to their answers. In almost all the videos you got to

see ways to ask questions on getting the how from your students. I want to use questions like can

you show me, what part of the story made you think that, what made you pick that, and how did

you finger that out. I also want to give positive feedback to how my students got their answers

even if they are not 100% right. I want to teach problem solving, critical thinking and reasoning

in my classroom.

Students being able to teach other students and critique each other is something I want to

use in my classroom. Students being able to explain how to do something is another way of

knowing they got the concepts though in class. I saw different ways to do this in the videos.

Peers interviewing each other, group work, coming up to the board to give answers, and reading

together. Being able to give critique and receive feedback help grown in our thinking. This helps

students be able to improve their work. Teaching this will help students in their futures outside of

school.

I got to see ways of introducing culture to different lessons. You can do that with

puppets, using art, setting up your lessons in that culture, for example if the cultures vote on

things then the class will vote on something. Using arts in different ways can be done in many

subjects to introduce culture. I want to use the culture of my classroom to help teach my lessons.

I liked seeing the classroom with different age groups and learning levels. How teachers

would mix their learners in groups. That lower grades would be with higher grade levels. How

that helps both students in their learning.

I learned a lot of great things to use in my classroom from the videos in this class. As a

teacher and want to teach my students more than just what needs to be taught. I want to teach

things they can carry with them outside of the classroom.
