BACKGROUND INFORMATION:

Communication styles are the broad ways in which people tend to communicate with others.
Every person has a unique communication style, a way in which they interact and exchange
information with others. There are also five language registers that tell how you communicate
with others depending on the situation or social environment you are in and who you are with.

Activity #1:
A. Travelling can be a challenge. There are many moments that your communication skills are
tested. There are five (5) language registers we do at certain situations and with different people:
intimate, casual, formal, consultative and frozen. Look at the picture below and think of ways we
express these 5 language registers when traveling.

B. Write a sentence of a character in a group of travelers based on the picture. How would others
respond to what the character was saying? What language register is used?

Activity #2: Read and understand the following situations below. Identify what communicative
style is being used. Choose your answer inside the box.

Activity #3 Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct but if it’s False change the
underline word or group of words to make the whole statement true.

It is used in semiformal situations where a speaker needs to provide background information
because the listener (or addressee) may not be able to understand without it.

between or among friends, peers, colleagues, or family who share a common knowledge or
interest

_____________________3. A formal speech style is often used in formal situations, such as in a


graduation ceremony, an official meeting, a television newscast, and a conference, where there is
only one-way communication.

_____________________4. An intimate speech style is used by participants who share a very close
relationship. This style is reserved for family members, friends, and lovers.

_____________________5. A casual speech style, also called the oratorical style, is the most
formal style and is reserved for very formal situations such as in religious services, state affairs,
and court proceedings.
