In what ways can Freud help this group?
Freud can help this group by sharing how they
can throw themselves into work/creative work.
For example Freud states that “one gains the
most if one can sufficiently heighten the yield
of pleasure from the sources of psychical and
intellectual work” (7). Being productive at
times like these ca help keep students from
feeling down about what they are missing out
on. Knowing that they are being productive
helps reassure them that they are preparing
themselves for their future. Working allows
them to feel a sense of pleasure every time
they complete something, whether it be
homework, an essay, or even something
creative they have been working on.
In what ways are Freud’s strategies not good
for this group?
Freuds strategies are not helpful for this group
when he speaks about people becoming a
hermit. I feel like right now people would be
drawn to that idea because of quarantine. I feel
like most people would want to reinvent
themselves at this point in time. What Freud
speaks about doesn’t help this group of people
at all. For example Freud states that “The
hermit turns his back on the world,… reality
becomes to strong for him and he becomes a
madman” (8). People in quarantine feel
isolated from the world and maybe they want
to try being a hermit. How can they try
something like this when Freud states that
they’ll end up becoming a “Madman”?

In what ways can Frankl help this group?
Frankl can help this group by explaining how
they can react to an unfortunate situation. For
example Frankl said that “everything can be
taken from a man but one thing: the last of the
human freedoms-to choose one's attitude in
any given set of circumstances, to choose one's
own way” (75). I feel like every student who
missed out on their senior year of high school
and now their first year of college must read
this quote. These circumstances are terrible
and unfortunate but its how you choose to
react and take control of what you know you
can accomplish, is what matters. It’ll help
them understand that they need to stop
focusing on the negative and focus on the
positive during this pandemic.
In what ways are Frankl’s strategies not good
for this group?
Not all of Frankl’s strategies are good because
not everyone one of his experiences can help
or be relatable to this group. Frankl speaks
about life as a prisoner, and what he did to
survive. So not everything he says can be
applied to a students life during a pandemic.
For example he sates that they “had no
documents; everyone was lucky to own his
body, which, after all, was still breathing”
(63). There not much sense of hope here or
anything helpful that could spark some type of
encouragement in a student.
