COURSE STRUCTURE & CLASS TIMINGS
NLS follows a trimester system, which means that the academic year is split into
three terms, each term with four courses. Each course has an attendance, paper
submission‐viva voce and examination component, which include a midterm and
end term assessment.
Unlike in many other universities, our attendance requirement is also part of the
final grade, with five marks being allotted to it. Classes begin at 8:50am and end
at 1:30pm, with three short breaks in the middle.
HOSTELS & MESS
Staying on campus is compulsory in the first year. For the first years, there is a
strict perm time that must be followed, and the first years are not allowed to be
off campus after 8pm. Break this rule, and you will have the disciplinary
committees on your back!
Since we haven’t adopted the co‐ed dorm system, there are separate hostels and
mess halls for boys and girls. The first year boys’ hostel (Himalaya) has triple
sharing rooms. The first year girls don’t have a separate hostel; so the room
arrangement depends on which hostel they’re assigned to.
Breakfast and dinner in the mess are included in the fees. Lunch and ‘extras’ are
optional and chargeable and there is a register to keep track of it in the mess.
CAMPUS INFRASTRUCTURE
The campus is Wi‐Fi enabled for the most part, including the hostels, the academic
block and the library. The library, besides being our most prominent architectural
marvel, is arguably the best law library in the country. You can always approach
the staff for guidance and help in effectively using the library, although there will

be a special library orientation sessions conducted for the benefit of the first
years.
Law School also has a fully equipped gym (along with a trainer) that is open for six
days of the week. The SBA common room is located in the Academic Block and
also houses the SBA library from where you can issue your regular non‐legal
fiction! Additionally, each hostel has a small common room of its own, with a TV
to make sure you don’t miss out on all those important matches.
For sports, we have several facilities within campus. We have a concrete
basketball court which gets spruced up annually, a clay tennis court and a
volleyball court. In a few months, we will also have a fully usable football field
with a planned small stadium facility right beside it. For indoor sports, we have
several Table Tennis tables in the hostel common rooms, as well as in the SBA
common room.
For other facilities, we have regularly tied up with the Sports Authority of India
branch situated at a walking distance from the campus, where one can avail of
their swimming pool, tennis, badminton, football and other sports facilities,
besides taking up coaching for some of these sports!
GUIDANCE & MENTORSHIP
In the first couple of weeks, several orientations (such as the library orientation,
project writing class, etc.) will be held to familiarise the students with how Law
School works. To further make things easier for the incoming batch, each student
will be assigned to mentors and two project guides. Although there are formal
orientations conducted, mentors and project guides always serve as an additional
source of help, at an individual level. Furthermore, on the academic side, a Legal
Methods course in the first trimester should settle the jitters and the trepidation
in engaging with the law. Simultaneously there are also various orientations to
acquaint the newbies with research databases, project writing, footnoting and
the library facilities.

Very soon, you will start receiving calls from the two of us regarding allocations of
mentors to make sure you have a comfortable beginning at law school, and find
yourselves at ease.

AROUND NLS
GETTING HERE
From the Airport
The airport is 42kms away from the campus, and is usually navigated by either
bus, or by a cab, taking close to an hour and half. Airport buses are available both
from the airport to the Vijayanagar bus stand, and from the Vijayanagar bus stand
to the airport (at regular intervals). Cabs are available on booking to and from the
airport to campus, but make economical sense only in groups of three or four.

takes close to 40 minutes to cover.

Modes of Travel
Meru (http://www.merucabs.com/) – Meru charges an additional fee for
booking last minute or over the phone, rather than online. They’re highly
professional and punctual, and are easy to book, and convenient as well, given
they are available anytime of the day over a phone call, and pick you up from
any place provided it’s a large enough distance.
EasyCabs (http://www.easycabs.com/) – Their services are exactly the same as
that of Meru Cabs, and are equally recommended.
Auto – The minimum fare for a journey is 20 rupees, but a lot of autos still have
the old fare metres (17), so be sure to check the fare conversion sheet that the
auto driver refers to at the end of your ride. Autos often claim prices above
the fare reading, and hence require a fair deal of negotiation. So it helps to
know the distance as well as the general fare before you head out to any
destination on an auto.

ON CAMPUS
1. The Canteen – The Law School canteen, located in the Acad‐Block, is where
you’d find all the students queuing up to get their daily cup of coffee between
classes! It’s also good for breakfast, especially if you’re running late to class
(or never manage to wake up in time for breakfast in the mess).
2. Coffee Day Express – A Coffee Day kiosk just outside the canteen, with a
variety of beverages and even some food.
3. Chetta ‐ Originally called ‘the law bakery’, Chetta is on campus and open till
midnight! Here you’ll be able to get everything from biscuits and chips to cold
coffee and scrambled eggs. The porch in front of the bakery is also where we
celebrate birthdays.
4. Bhairav ‐ Missing North Indian food in Southieland? Well, Bhairav can help
with that. Although it’s a tiny, you can still satisfy your paratha and lassi
cravings here.
5. Bhukkad ‐ Started by one of our own, Bhukkad offers a menu that is
different from the usual things around and is a must visit when you’re bored
of the mess routine, and even otherwise. Personal recommendation: Try a
glass of the mint lime juice and you will make it a staple!
