Pam and Julie Case Study

Pam and Julie worked at J & J’s Supermarket. Pam has worked there since 2017. Julie has worked there since 2019. Randy, their manager, has a
position open for head cashier making two dollars more an hour. He knows he is expected to give the job to Pam, who has been working there
for more years and is seldom late, even though she is out “sick” frequently. However, Julie—who has fewer years’ experience—is always on
time and is almost never absent.

1. What would you do if you were Randy?

If I were Randy then I would figure out which girl would be more crucial for the position and really take my time to figure out what each girl
brings, how is their overall behavior and motivation to the job, who could potentially do the job better and be more sufficient and not really base
it off the fact that one worked there longer then the other.

2. How should Julie feel if Pam gets the job?

It’s expected for her to feel a little upset but if Pam were to get the job then she should understand that it was for the right reasons. She’s still
not experienced enough and even though she’s on time and does what she’s told it’s the fact that she may not be ready for that position just yet
and should focus on building up her experience first.
3. How should Pam feel if Julie gets the job?
She has every right to be upset but she would have to understand that she’s to blame for a portion of not getting the job. If she took it more
serious and really showed her manager that she wanted it then she could have got it. Pam should also understand that she needs to take the
extra initiative to better manage her time at work to be considered for higher positions.

4. What are three goals can Pam set for herself in order to better manage her time at work?
- 1) set aside time to really get what she needs done before work
- 2) work with her manger to accommodate her schedule so that it works for her
- 3) make more of an effort when it comes to her job
