Worksheet: The Philippines Disaster Context
Worksheet: The Philippines Disaster Context
Application
1. Make a profile of your community and list down what disaster are commonly
happened.
Activity:
Analyze the given images and answer the ff. questions.
1. In two to three sentences, describe the given images
The image shows the different disaster that people experienced/experiencing.
In its given phrase "WHAT IF...?" it tells what should the people do if that
disaster may happen to their place or may they encounter it. The image
constract an idea of how we prevent and be prepared in case if there where
disaster may we encounter such us storm, fire, accident, and earthquake.
2. List down the disasters that you can identify from the images.
Storm surge, flooding, car accident, fire, snow
storm,chemicalspills,earthquake, and tornado.
Analysis:
1. Based on the images what are the two types of Disaster?
Base on the given picture the two types of disaster are:
a. Natural disasters
b. Man made disaster
Application:
1. Choose which photo depicts to disaster prone community and explain why
A B
Base on the given images above the community that prone to disaster was image A. In image A we can see that the
community was near in the sea witch is prone to tsunami. When the sea level arises their community must easy to reach
by the water.the exposure of the community into hazard was portraying in image A the distance from the ocean is not to
far to reach by the water. The sand of the sea is changing dependent on the direction of waves. Sometimes they go up
and it may cause to cover up communityby the sand. Sometimes they go down or carried by the water from its place to
far or deep in the ocean it may cause soil erosion or landslide if the community was built near from the ocean it may
cause greater damage.
AB
Basin the given pictures above the community that prone to disaster was picture A. It shows that the community was
built near or exactly in the fault line which may causegreater damage. Fault line is a break or fracture in the ground that
occurs when the Earth's tectonic plates move or shift and are areas where earthquakes are likely to occur. Also volcanic
eruption may occur. One of the example of this is the Icelandic Volcanic Eruption-this type is characterized by effusions of
molten basaltic lava that flow from long, parallel fissures. People live near the fault line has a great chance to lose their
lives.
A B
Base on the given pictures above the community that prone to disaster was picture B. It shows that the community was
built near the volcano. When the volcano erupts their is a greater chance that the community near the volcano cannot
be evacuate. Volcanic eruptions often cause temporary food shortages and volcanic ash landslides called Lahar. Further
effects are the deterioration of water quality, fewer periods of rain, crop damages, and the destruction of vegetation.
During volcanic eruptions and their immediate aftermath, increased respiratory system morbidity has been observed as
well as mortality among those affected by volcanic eruptions.
2. Make House Hazard Mapping
Analysis:
1. Which of the two terms weather and climate influence disaster?
Both terms may influence disaster. Meteorological disasters are caused by
extreme weather, e.g. rain, drought, snow, extreme heat or cold, ice, or wind.
Climate change affects global temperature and precipitation patterns. These
effects, in turn, influence the intensity and, in some cases, the frequency of
extreme environmental events, such as forest fires, hurricanes, heat waves,
floods, droughts, and storms.
Application:
To protect your community from the ill effect of climate change, illustrate
action plans that you can do to ensure safety. Choose two from the given problems.
1. Community high risk of flooding due to banana plantation
2. Low land community risk to flooding
3. High land community high risk to landslide
4. Community high risk to chemicals
Problem: High land community high risk to landslide
Why? To evacuate, save lives, give new home or relocate them, and
preserve the area.
How? With the help of the voluntaries in planting trees and help to evacute
the citizens living in that area. By the implementation of the local
government the plan must be strengthen and be done.
Materials Needed:
Shovel (for planting trees)
Boots
Garden trowel
Watering can
Patience (in explaining to the citizens why they need to evacuate.)
Project sponsors:
Mother Earth Foundation
Department of Environment and Natural Resources
City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office
Problem: Low Land Community Risk Flooding
How? With the help of the people and strict enforcement of officials in the
activity this could be done.
Materials Needed:
• Shovel
• Rake
• Boots
• Wheel barrow
• Gloves
