CISCO VPN CLIENT INSTALLATION AND CONFIGURATION

Overview
What is Virtual Private Network (VPN)?
A virtual private network (VPN) is a technology for using the Internet
or another intermediate network to connect computers to an isolated remote
computer network that would otherwise be inaccessible. VPN provides security so
that traffic sent through the VPN connection stays isolated from other computers on
the intermediate network. VPNs can connect individual users to a remote network or
connect multiple networks together.

For users to be able to access the IFMIS System at their remote areas, they must
install the Cisco VPN client software in their computer
Installation of CISCO VPN Client
❖ Insert the USB drive with Cisco VPN client.
Click the cisco VPN client setup to installation.
The VPN Client Installation Wizard dialog box will appear as shown below,Click
next to accept the license agreement.
Select a folder where the application is to be installed, then click next.
Click next to start installation.
❖ After
a successful installation, click Finish and restart your computer for the configuration
made to take effect, for 64-bit setup file you don‟t need to restart the computer.
 VPN CLIENT CONFIGURATION
After successfully installing VPN: Go to Start >All Programs > Cisco System VPN
Client Folder > click VPN Client. The VPN Dialog box will appear.
❖ To create
a new VPN connection, click the “NEW” icon. A dialog box written “Create
New VPN Connection Entry”, like the one shown below will appear.
 Fill in the Connection entry, Host, Group Authentication, Name and Password
fields as shown in the diagram below then click the Save button.
 Then click Connect.

❖ After clicking on the connect icon, a „user authentication‟ dialog box like the one below
will appear, fill username and password.
❖ When successfully connected, the message at the bottom left of the dialog box will
read connected to “Dfund”.
Possible Errors that may occur when attempting a connection
Reason 412: The remote peer is no longer responding.
This error occurs when there is a firewall that is blocking the connection or can be because
of the internet connection which is not stable, some packets are not reaching the VPN server
or the replies from server aren‟t getting to the client, hence the client thinks server is no
longer available.

Solution: Turn Off the Firewall and then test the connection if it works and also Check
to make sure you have a strong internet connection
Reason 413: User authentication failed appears.

When you type a wrong username/password three times;

Solution: type correct username and/or password

Reason 403: Unable to Contact Security Gateway.

Appears when there is no internet connection and you are trying to connect.
Solution: Check to make sure the strong internet connection is available.
 Reason 442: failed to enable virtual adapter
This error appears in Windows 8 and 10 the time you want to connect VPN.

Solution: To solve the VPN Client virtual adapter error on Window 8 and 10 you are
Required to follow the procedures below to edit the registry.
1. Run regedit
2. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
3. SYSTEM
4. CurrentControlSet
5. Services
6. CVirtA
7. Right Click DisplayName then click Modify then remove all the preceeding characters,
Only Cisco Systems VPN Adapter for 64-bit Windows should be there .
Error 5 : No hostname exists for this connection entry. Unable to make
VPN connection.
Solution: Open VPN Client > click Modify> type host: 154.118.227.170/147 >
click save, and then Click connect.
When you modify and connect again and no errors appear ping 192.168.5.197 to
check if it replies from the DFund server, if it is okay type the DFund address in google
chrome or Mozira firefox browsers.

Before installation of cisco vpn client setup in
window 8 and 10 you have first to install DNE
setup which will be provided in vpn folder
together with vpn client to clear some errors
which may occour during installations but in
window 7 there is no need to install this DNE
