Identifying or defining a problem, opportunity or project:

In recent FLNG FEED project, before starting the FEED, client provided facility design basis for new gas
field development and a reference FEED package prepared for similar size but different gas composition
field to estimate the quantum of work to be done in FEED. I review the gas processing design basis
section and raised clarification to client. Major concern and clarification are described as following.

Methane content in the feed gas (after acid gas removal) was same as the reference FEED, the acid gas
concentration has increased about 3.5 times (from 1.5 mole% to 5.6mole %). It is identified by me during
early review of design basis and conveyed to client that there would be significant change in Acid Gas
Removal Unit (AGRU) as compare to reference FEED. I also requested for more design margin for this
unit keeping in mind that this was the first application of AGRU in offshore environment where motion
affects column performance. Finally it was agreed with client that the AGRU will be designed based on
acid gas concentration of 7.0mole% (25% design margin) in the feed gas to cover any uncertainty in
composition and effect of motion.

Client design basis had some information on HOLD due to ongoing design work by others from where
the gas was fed to the LNG facility. One of such items which I found was the definition of mercaptan
species (R-SH) and concentration in the feed gas. Although the R-SH concentration in the feed gas from
well was fully defined, but this gas was processed to strip out any heavy hydrocarbons in an onshore
plant designed by others. I raised an official clarification to client on this matter through proper channel
and made client aware about the possible risk on contractor and for overall project to precede design
based on partial or insufficient relay upon information, because this issue could impact the design of
entire hot section including dehydration and mercury removal section.

Client was unable to confirm the mercaptan (R-SH) concentration in feed gas to FLNG due to ongoing
design work and pending technology selection for the onshore stripping plant which is handled by
others. On the contractor side, contractor did not want to take risk by designing a plant on assumption
which may or may not be true in the future. After several round of discussion with client, it is concluded
that contractor will develop two designs for hot section. One is called “reference case” which assumes
no R-SH in the feed gas and second is “mercaptan case” which assumes R-SH concentration in feed gas
same as feed gas to onshore stripping plant.

I was my responsibility to propose proper technology selection for R-SH removal from feed gas and
treatment of removed R-SH and acid gases as directed by regulation. The client will make final
technology selection decision as per outcome of selection study.
