In this example only two iterations are required as the process converges rapidly to a solution.

The required bearing rating, C, is 5.09 ×104 N.

Space restrictions exist and so the designer requires a bearing, with the minimum overall diameter, that
satisfies the dynamic load rating requirement. Figure 4 indicates that the dimensions of a suitable single
row radial ball bearing are a shaft diameter of 45 mm and an overall diameter of 120 mm. Inspection of a
bearing catalogue reveals that a bearing with these dimensions is available and has a dynamic load rating
of 58 500 N.

7.2 Example 2

A single-throated worm gear drive for a lift is to be designed. The designer’s preliminary layout is shown
schematically in Sketch 1 and the following design parameters have been chosen.

(i) Gear ratio = 50:1

(ii) Pitch circle diameter of wheel D B = 347 mm
(iii) Pitch circle diameter of worm, D A = 67 mm
(iv) Estimated efficiency factor, E = 0.9
(v) Pressure angle, ψ= 20°
(vi) Input power W = 3.73 kW
(vii) Input speed, n A = 1500 rev/min
(viii) Output speed, n B = 30 rev/min

Sketch 1

The designer has decided that bearing 1 will locate the worm shaft axially while bearing 2 will be
non-locating. Axial loads can occur in either direction and so bearing 1 is required to
locate the shaft in both directions.

The designer calculates the forces acting on bearing 1 as follows:

4 4 3
6 × 10 × W 6 × 10 × 3.73 × 10
Tangential force on worm, T A = -------------------------------- = ------------------------------------------------------ = 709 N .
ΠD A n A Π × 67 × 1500
