Philosophy of Classroom Management

Classroom management is the power source for a successful learning environment. A

well-structured classroom consists of organization and procedures that benefit students and the
teacher. A framework that I believe will help establish strong classroom management is
Restorative Justice. Restorative Justice is a philosophy about behavior issues that guide students
to participate in positive, supportive, and inclusive interactions with one another (Thompson,
2018). Relationship and community building is a vital part of classroom management. In my
classroom, students’ voices must be heard, especially when issues or challenging behaviors arise.
Therefore, a restorative justice strategy that I will use is open communication and inclusion. My
goal is to create a safe place for students. Integrating restorative practices can help me omit and
prevent punitive discipline.

A major component of my classroom management plan is teaching procedures. It is

important to manage a well-structured classroom, procedures must be implemented. According
to Harry Wong and Rosemary T. Wong, “A well-managed, smooth-running class depends on the
teacher’s ability to teach procedures”(47). Therefore, to have a productive classroom, I will
teach, rehearse, and reinforce classroom procedures. I want my students to meet classroom
expectations so that they can learn in an effective learning environment. I will create appropriate
procedures that I believe will benefit all of my students.

To be inclusive, I plan for my instruction to be differentiated. I believe that we all learn in

different ways. I will approach teaching in diverse ways so that every student’s needs are met.
Incorporating various resources and strategies can help support my students to achieve their
goals. One key strategy that I will use for differentiation is to implement individualized
instruction. Customizing or making accommodations for students with disabilities or behavioral
challenges will specifically address students’ needs. Therefore, it is my responsibility to research
the student’s learning preferences, interests, and readiness to appropriately meet their individual
needs.

Overall, my classroom management plan will center around the inclusion and safety of
my students. According to Julia G. Thompson, “Teach your students to value their differences.
When you do this, you are creating a truly global classroom. By expanding students’
appreciation of one another, you are showing them how to appreciate the rest of the world (205).
A culturally responsive classroom and classroom management intertwined with each other.
Therefore, I will integrate my students’ cultures into my classroom. By celebrating and
acknowledging the different ways culture approaches learning and discipline. My classroom
management plan will create a culturally sensitive learning space for all students and unite us to
form a community.
