Activity 1.1

NON- MENDELIAN PATTERN OF HEREDITY

Problem 1:

Imagine you are a genetic counselor. A man and woman have come to you for
advice. They present the information given in each problem below. Predict the
genotypes and phenotypes that would be expected from each mating. Let X N = the
normal allele and Xn = the allele for hemophilia. Create a Punnett square for each
problem and show your work.

a. Normal female with no history of hemophilia anywhere in the family and a

normal male with no history of hemophilia anywhere in the family.

b. Normal female whose father had hemophilia and a normal male.

c. Why are male more likely to inherit X-linked diseases?

Problem 2:

In a large family in which all the daughters have normal vision and all the sons are
colorblind, what are the probable genotypes of the parents?

Problem 3:

In cats, one gene for coat color is X-Linked. Male cats are either black or orange,
depending on which allele they carry. Females are black, orange or tortoise-shell
(Patches of black and orange), with the tortoise shell resulting from the heterozygous
genotype. Cross a black furred female with an orange male. What are the possible
phenotypes and genotypes?

Problem 4:

Cross a man that has type AB blood with a women that is hybrid for type B blood.
Create a Punnett square to find the following to show the results of this cross.

ABO Blood Groups

Phenotype Genotype Transfusion Transfusion
(Blood Type) s TO s FROM
A IAIA or IAi A, AB A, O
B IBIB or IBi B, AB B, O
AB IAIB AB A, B, AB, O
O ii A, B, AB, O O

a. List the possible phenotypes of the offspring:

b. What is the p-ratio for the offspring?

c. Based on your work, how many of their children (out of 4) will able to
donate blood to their father?
