When I was a teenager, my great grandfather was nearing his end, he was fighting every day to

do the simplest things, unfortunately only a few years after he died of Alzheimer's. Today this is
why I want a career in the medical field. I would go and see my great grandfather as often as I
could, all of us could see the deterioration happening more and more as the months went on. We
would show him cards and ask him what was on them and show him how to get dressed every
day. When my family went back home, I could not eat or sleep I was not able to concentrate in
school or on my homework. The most impactful day was when he forgot my name and never
remembered it ever again. After a little time, I accepted that he would not remember who I was, I
wanted to make the most out of my time with him so I was whoever he wanted to call me this
because of a positive impact, I had accepted what was happening. I would go home and research
and see what he was going through finding out it causes brain cells to degenerate and die. I had
to tell myself there would be an end and knowing he would leave me soon. This impacted me by
accepting that I knew a time would come and I had to make peace. The impact this event had on
me for many years is the real reason I want to be in the medical field, Alzheimer’s is a horrible
disease and I hope day I can be there for someone’s family like the nurses were there for my
great grandfather.
