Do you know what took 2.5 million rivets, 300 steel workers, 15,000 iron
pieces and 40 tons of paint? The Eiffel Tower. In Paris, it is known as
La Tour Eiffel or La Dame De Fer , meaning the Iron Lady. When
finished, it was the tallest building of the world. Nowadays it is the most
visited paid monument.
But, what can you expect to see if you visit the Eiffel tower? You would
have to climb 1,665 steps to get to the top
and at night admire the 20,000 light bulbs
illuminating the city of Paris.
The Eiffel Tower was built by Gustave
Eiffel. He had an apartment at the very
top of the Tower to entertain
aristocracy. Gustave also helped in the
construction of the Statue of Liberty in
Ellis Island.
The Eiffel Tower was inaugurated in 1889.
It took 2 years, 2 months and 5 days to
complete. It is 320 meters tall and 6
inches taller in the summer as the steel
expands. It weighs 10,000 tons. It is said that the paint in the Eiffel
Tower weighs as much as 10 elephants. The Eiffel Tower was not
intended to stand for long. However, its use as a telegraph transmitter
allowed it to still stand.
Many countries have made replicas of the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower
is an amazing world monument.
