Lino Brocka
1939-1991
Year of Conferment
∙ Lino Brocka was an award-winning director who
used “freedom of expression” in his works.
∙ The contribution of Lino Brocka to Philippine cinema
is unparalleled, with 66 films that
“breathed life and hope for marginalized sectors
of society,”
∙ He directed the movie Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag the said
film is considered as one of the classics of Filipino cinema.
∙ His other films include Wanted: Perfect Mother (1970), Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (1974), Insiang (1976),
Jaguar (1979), Bona (1980), Macho Dancer (1988), Ora Pro Nobis (Fight for Us, 1989), and Gumapang Ka
sa Lusak (1990)
Ishmael Bernal
1938-1996
Year of Conferment: 2001
∙ Ishmael Bernal was the so-called “Genius of the Philippine Cinema”
∙ His works were reflections of the existing realities of the Philippine society and
the struggle of the Filipino people.
∙ In the 1982, Bernal directed the critically acclaimed H imala s tarring Nora Aunor.
∙ Some of his other famous works include the films Dalawang Pugad, Isang Ibon
(Two Nests, One Bird 1
977), Lagi na Lamang Ba Akong Babae? (Will I Always Be Just a Women?1978)

Eddie S. Romero
1924-2013
Year of Conferment: 2003
∙ Eddie Romero’s works, as cited, “are delivered in an utterly
simplestyle
---minimalist, but never empty, always calculated, precise andfunctional,
but never predictable.”
∙ His most recognized work, Ganito Kami Noon… Paano Kayo Ngayon?
∙ Another classic by Romero is kamakalawa, a film that probed into indigenous precolonial Philippines. ∙ He
is also responsible for bringing an on-screen adaption of Jose Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere in a 13-series. ∙ The list of
his films also includes A guila, Hari sa Hari, Lahi sa Lahi, Isumpa Mo Giliw, and Faces of Love.
VISUALART
In the Philippines, we have a mixture of western and native cultural influences. Like when spaniards invaded
the country, they introduce to us the western styles of painting and carving. That is the reason why most of the
churches have becomce informal museums where paintings and statues abound.
Visual art is a modern but imprecise umbrella term for a broad category of art which includes a number of
artistic disciplines from various sub-categories. Its wide ambit renders meaningless any attempt at definition.
Filipino visual artists still use the native forms and subject with the touch of foreign styles and techniques in arts.

Review on the movie ‘Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?”
The film, “Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon?” by Eddie Romero, presented the state of the F ilipino
independence d uring the Spanish Colonial Period up to the American Colonial period. Although the film was quite
dragging at times, It was able to tackle important but sensitive topics in a very creative, comedic and symbolic manner
that barely left an opportunity for boredom; these topics include the maltreatment of the Spaniards on the Filipinos, the
conflict between the rich and the poor, the ignorance or lack of education of the Filipinos in the provinces during those
years, and most importantly, the varying definition of the word “Filipino.”

VII. NTEGRATION PROCESS AND SYNTHESIS
Without the brilliance and dedication of national artists, Philippine cinema will not be as competitive and highly
spirited as it is today.
The Filipino movie industry will continue to thrive if we will continue to show support and patronage to the craft.
We should avoid buying pirated movies or downloading films in the internet because it can kill the movie
industry in the country.
Supporting local works can be difficult especially for those with tight budgets. However, we can try legitimate
alternatives such as renting or waiting for the movies to be shown by local networks
