INTRODUCTION

A. Background
Descriptive text, or in terms of writing simply known as "description" is one English
lessons to be mastered not only by the junior high school children, but also by the high school
kids, students and anyone who loves the English language. Because after all, writing
descriptive material is necessary for the development of English language proficiency us.
Some of the writers, particularly writers of fiction, has the ability to write descriptive text
so well that writing is very readable at the same time easy to understand. Therefore, if we are
able to master this lesson well, we might later be a great writer in the future.

B. Formulation Of The Problem

1. What the meaning of descriptive text?
2. What is the purpose of descriptive text?
3. What are the kind of descriptive text?
4. What are examples of descriptive text?

CHAPTER II
CONTENTS

A. Definition Of Descriptive Text

Descriptive Text is a text which says what a person or a thing is like. Its purpose is to
describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.
In a broad sense, description, as explained by Kane (2000: 352), is defined like in the
following sentence : Description is about sensory experience—how something looks, sounds,
tastes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also deals with other kinds of
perception.
Thus, if we conclude it from Kane’s explanation above, the descriptive text is
meaningful text that describes the experience related to the senses, such as what shape,
sound, taste is. Most descriptive text is about visual experience, but in fact the experience
other than the sense of sight, we can also use it to make descriptive text.
But in particular, the descriptive text is, “…… is a text which says what a person or a
thing is like. Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing.”
So, it can be said that this descriptive text is a text that explains about whether a
person or an object is like, whether its form, its properties, its amount and others. The
purpose of the descriptive text is clear, that is to describe, represent or reveal a person or an
object, either abstract or concrete.

B. Purpose Descriptive Text

As social beings, people need to share their experience, so they write to others to
describe things such as vacations, childhood homes, and people they encounter.
As the examples in the following chart show, description enable people to entertain,
express fellings, relate experience, inform, and persuade (Fine, 2002).
No Purpose Description
1 To Entertain An amusing description of a teenager‟s
bedroom
2 To express feelings A description of your favorite outdoor retreat
so your reader understands why you enjoy it
so much
3 To relate experience A description of your childhood home to
convey a sense of the poverty you grew up
4 To inform (for a reader A description of a newborn calf for a reader
which unfamiliar with the who has never seen one
subject)

2
5 To inform (to create a fresh A description of an apple to help the reader
appreciation for the familiar) rediscover the joys of this simple fruit
6 To persuade (to convince the A description of degrading music and
reader that some music
videos degrade women)

C. Kind Of Descriptive Text

Writing Descriptive text vividly explains about a person, place or thing which can
make the reader imagine what is described. In writing Descriptive text, Alwasilah (2007)
mention four kinds of Descriptive text that can be explored.
a) First, historical profile that provides an interesting accurate report of places, times or
events.
b) Second, venture profile which deeply reports about occupation or business.
c) Third, reporting from interview, field observation, and other research.
d) Fourth, a case study which tells about someone‟s experience in representing a cluster,
such as sacrifice of disaster, immigrant community, and a personal research report
that serves the story specifically about an observation which entertains the reader.
Descriptive text can also be about an usual hobby, new technology, etc

D. Example Of All Descriptive Text

Example : About Place
Taj Mahal
Taj Mahal is regarded as one of the eight wonders of the world. It was built by a
Muslim Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his dear wife at Agra.
Taj Mahal is a Mausoleum that houses the grave of queen Mumtaz Mahal. The
mausoleum is a part of a vast complex comprising of a main gateway, an elaborate garden, a
mosque (to the left), a guest house (to the right), and several other palatial buildings. The Taj
is at the farthest end of this complex, with the river Jamuna behind it.
The Taj stands on a raised, square platform (186 x 186 feet) with its four corners
truncated, forming an unequal octagon. The architectural design uses the interlocking
arabesque concept, in which each element stands on its own and perfectly integrates with the
main structure. It uses the principles of self-replicating geometry and a symmetry of
architectural elements.
Its central dome is fifty-eight feet in diameter and rises to a height of 213 feet. It is
flanked by four subsidiary domed chambers. The four graceful, slender minarets are 162.5

3
feet each. The central domed chamber and four adjoining chambers include many walls and
panels of Islamic decoration.
Taj Mahal is built entirely of white marble. Its stunning architectural beauty is beyond
adequate description, particularly at dawn and sunset. The Taj seems to glow in the light of
the full moon. On a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when
viewed from across the Jamuna river.

Example : About Animal

My Cat Lisih
Lisih is my beautiful gray Persian cat. He walks with pride and grace, performing a
dance of disdain as he slowly lifts and lowers each paw with the delicacy of a ballet dancer.
His pride, however, does not extend to his appearance, for he spends most of his time indoors
watching television and growing fat.
He enjoys TV commercials, especially those for Meow Mix and 9 Lives. His
familiarity with cat food commercials has led him to reject generic brands of cat food in favor
of only the most expensive brands.
Lisih is as finicky about visitors as he is about what he eats, befriending some and
repelling others. He may snuggle up against your ankle, begging to be petted, or he may
imitate a skunk and stain your favorite trousers.
Lisih does not do this to establish his territory, as many cat experts think, but to
humiliate me because he is jealous of my friends.
After my guests have fled, I look at the old fleabag snoozing and smiling to himself in
front of the television set, and I have to forgive him for his obnoxious, but endearing, habits.
