Creating a Scales Worksheet in Dorico

Start the project

You should have been supplied with a file called ‘worksheet start file.dorico’ to start from. To start the
project either double-click on the file, press Ctrl + O (Windows) Cmd + O (Mac) to open an existing
project, or navigate to File > Open…
NB: This supplied project has some useful options already set such as a single instrument, turned off
the staff labels (in Layout Options > Staves and Systems), created a blank master page, and created
a music layout frame. Turn to the last page to see how the file was created and make your own.
• Firstly, navigate to File > Save As… so that any further saving does not over-write the original
file in case you want to use it again.
• Give your file a name such as ‘Scales worksheet’.

Creating text frames

• To create a text frame for the Name, Class and worksheet title press Ctrl + 3 (Windows) Cmd
+ 3 (Mac) to switch to Engrave mode.
• You will see the blue music frame that has already been created.
• In the top of the left-hand panel, click on the frames toggle so
that you can create and control frames.
• Click on the text frame button (the middle of the three buttons)
and then click and drag at the top of the page to create a green
text frame that starts on the left page margin and ends half-way
across the page. Figure 1: The frames switch and

another text frame that starts in the centre and ends at the right
page margin.
• Create another text frame under the first two frames for the worksheet title. Make this frame
full-width across the top of the page as the Title paragraph style will be automatically centred
in a frame.

Resizing frames
When the frames switch is on you can use the mouse to drag the handles on the edge of any
frame to adjust its size. You can also use the arrow keys on your keyboard to navigate between
frames, then press the Tab key and use the arrow keys to navigate to each handle on a frame.
With a handle selected you can adjust the size of the frame using Alt + arrow keys or move in
larger jumps with Ctrl + Alt + arrow keys (Windows) Cmd + Alt + arrow keys (Mac).

Adding text
• Double-click in the top left text frame and type Name:
• Double-click in the top right text frame and type Class:
• Double-click in the full-width text frame and type the title
Scales Worksheet
• In the top left of the text tool set the paragraph style option to
Title as shown in figure 2 and then just click on a blank
space on the worksheet.
• You will now see the same as the figure 3, below. Figure 2: Text tool showing many
options

Figure 3: Progress so far.

• To add a border to a text frame, press Ctrl + 8 (Windows) Cmd + 8 (Mac) to open the
properties panel at the bottom of your screen.
• Select the Name: frame and in the properties panel tick the ‘Show border’ box. You’ll also
want to turn the Padding switch on and add 5 points of padding.
• Now select the Class: frame and do the same again with the border and padding and then
press Ctrl + 8 (Windows) Cmd + 8 (Mac) to close the properties panel.

Adding music
• Switch to Write mode by pressing Ctrl + 2 (Windows) Cmd + 2 (Mac)
• Select the rest and press Enter to turn on the caret to enter some notes – crotchet note length
should automatically be selected in the left panel, but press number 6 on your keyboard or
click on the crotchet icon in the left panel if it is not already selected.
• If you have a MIDI keyboard connected, play a scale of C. If you don’t have a MIDI
keyboard, simply press the letter C, optionally press Ctrl + Alt + down arrow (Windows) Cmd
+ Alt + down arrow (Mac) to switch octaves, and then letters D, E, F, G, A, B and C for the
rest of the scale.
• With the caret still active press Ctrl + B (Windows)
Cmd + B (Mac) for the bars popover and in the popover
Bars popover options: type single and then press Enter. This will enter a
single barline. (If you can find it on your keyboard you

New key, new flow

• To create a new scale in the key of D, we’ll create a new flow so that it is an independent
section of music.
• Switch to Setup mode by pressing Ctrl + 1 (Windows) Cmd + 1 (Mac)
• Double-click on Flow 1 to rename it and simply call it C
• To create a new flow press Shift + F, or click on the + button in the lower panel to the right of
any existing flows.
• Double-click and rename Flow 2 – call it D.
• Switch to Engrave mode by pressing Ctrl + 3 (Windows) Cmd + 3 (Mac)
• Turn on the Frames switch if it isn’t already on and then use the first button to create a new
music frame – click and drag on the page to create it under the existing scale. (You might
want to leave some space under the existing flow to enter text or graphics later.)
• Dorico will automatically put your new flow called D into this music frame, but if you click on
the Flows filter (shown in figure 5) you can see that you could switch
and show any flow in this frame.
• Switch to Write mode by pressing Ctrl + 2 (Windows) Cmd + 2 (Mac)
• Select the rest in the new flow and then press Shift + K and enter D in
the popover for the new key.
• Press Enter to start note input with the caret line and type D, E, F, G, A,
B, C, D for the notes of the scale, then Shift + B for the bars popover
and as before type single in the popover and press Enter.

arrow (Mac) if you want to switch octaves and then F, A, D to complete
the arpeggio. Press Enter to turn off the note input caret.
• If you wish you can now repeat this section and create new flows for new scales in new keys.

Now you decide

You could:
• Add more scales, each in its own frame.
• Reposition the frames in Engrave mode.
• Use the filters to switch keys in each music frame.
• Add text frames to ask the students to label each note – maybe use the Lyrics feature to add a
hyphen under each note and reposition the hyphens using Engraving Options Ctrl + Shift + E
(Windows) Cmd + Shift + E (Mac) in the Lyrics section. Tip: in the Lyrics popover use Alt +
Shift + _ to make a longer underscore and in Engraving Options set the minimum distance to
5 spaces or more.
• Add graphics and ask the students to draw a line from each note to the key on a piano.

Here is a finished example showing some of the options you could choose.

Creating a scales worksheet Page 4 Steinberg Media Technologies GmbH

How the worksheet start file was created
If you want to create a worksheet from scratch there are some steps that you’ll want to do to turn off
some of the defaults when you start a new project in Dorico.
This is how the worksheet start file.dorico was created.
• Starting at the Dorico hub, press Ctrl + N (Windows) Cmd + N (Mac) to start a new project
• To add a new player press Shift + P, type e.g. flute and press Enter or the Add button
• To turn off the staff labels press Ctrl + Shift + L (Windows) Cmd + Shift + L (Mac) for the
Layout Options dialog. In the top left corner change the category to Staves and Systems and
then change the Staff labels for the first system and subsequent systems both to None.
Then press Apply and Close.

Editing Master Pages

Since with most worksheets you want to define exactly where the music is placed, we’ll create a blank
Master Frame to start from.
• Switch to Engrave mode by pressing Ctrl + 3 (Windows) Cmd + 3 (Mac)
• From the right-hand panel in the Master Pages section click on the + icon to create a new
Master Page.
• In the New Master Page dialog give it a name e.g. Blank and leave the Based on: as (None)
and the Type: as Custom and press OK.
• From the top of the right-hand panel in the Pages section, select page 1 and then right-click
on it and choose ‘Insert Master Page Change…’
• In the Insert Master Page Change dialog just change the Use master page: option to your new
Blank page and press OK.
You will now have a blank page to work on and can create your music frames.

Creating Music Layout Frames

• In the left-hand panel click on the Frames switch to enable Frame editing.
• Click on the Insert Music Frame button and then click and drag on the page to create a new
music layout frame labelled LA (L = layout and A = the first frame, the next one will be LB and
so on).
• Dorico will automatically insert the first flow, but you can use the filters if you want to choose
which flow or instrument to display in this music frame.
You can now add text and graphics frames as per the worksheet example above, or switch to Write
mode and start entering notes for your own worksheet.
