KOTA KINABALU: A giant effort will be needed for the revival of foreign tourism, former
state tourism minister Masidi Manjun said today.
Masidi, who is the state’s Covid-19 spokesman, cautioned against expectations that
tourism will undergo a speedy recovery once Covid-19 vaccines are available.
“I hope everyone will not pin their hopes on the tourism sector’s recovery on the vaccine
because it doesn’t mean people will immediately flood our state the moment we open our
gates – they still have their concerns,” said Masidi, who was tourism minister in the
previous Barisan Nasional government.
“Second, our tourism players need time to restart their operations, which were almost
crippled after tourism stopped in February or March – so there are many things outside
our control,” he said.

“The most important thing to take into consideration is there is a clear green light from
the health ministry on the vaccine’s efficacy,” he said at his Covid-19 briefing today.
“So once they (ministry) say this is effective, then obviously we’ll take the cue from there.
Sabah accounts for over a third of Malaysia’s total of 80,309 Covid-19 cases.
