1 The Different Meanings of Color

In this discussion board I'd like you to identify more meanings that are associated with colors (it
may be based on peculiarity or idiosyncrasy; emotional, cultural or socio-economic contexts).
Name three colors that you want and then discuss what they mean in particular context. Limit
your write-up to 200 words. When you are done, comment on two answers coming from you
peers.
Color plays a significant role in our lives. Everywhere we look we are surrounded by color. It
influences our emotions and actions and helps communicate to others. They carry meanings
which may vary depending on the context in which it is used.
Color is also used to establish identity of a nation. Every country has a flag. It represents the
state and its people. Flags have different colors and designs which are not just for visual
element but also symbolize the country’s values, culture and history. Most flags used red, blue
and white. An example with this color combination is the Philippine flag. Red stands for valor
and courage. It also represents the bloodshed during the country’s fight for independence. Blue
represents peace, truth, and justice. White symbolizes liberty and equality.
Section 9.6 Discussion: Affecting Meaning
How do the elements of art (i.e. color, shape, and etc.) affect meaning in a work?
Elements of art help artists convey their message and thoughts. They impart the content and
story of an artwork and allow artists to create an impact through the visual elements of their
work. They affect the meaning of an artwork as they serve as symbols and they guide viewers
on how to perceive an art piece. An example is using color yellow in an artwork. Artists use this
color to signify happiness and excitement just like in Vincent Van Gogh’s painting, Sunflowers.
He used three shades of yellow to express his emotions and to create a joyful mood.
Sunflowers is considered one of the most joyful paintings in the history of art.

In this painting, he used yellow to symbolize his joy. He was full of excitement when he made
this piece as he was waiting for the arrival of his fellow painter Paul Gauguin with whom he
dreamed of setting up a studio. Through the color used by Van Gogh, viewers are able to
determine and understand emotions he wants to portray.

Quiz on Line
What do you feel when you see Mondrian’s lines?
Mondrian’s lines are mostly composed of horizontal and vertical lines that varies in thickness
and they form geometric shapes such as rectangles and squares. At first, I feel like it’s just a
simple painting because of its basic composition. It is difficult to relate to real life situations as it
is different from the usual paintings that we see that depicts real life subjects. Seeing
Mondrian’s lines, I feel calm and restful because of its simplicity. Contrast of colors are in
harmony and creates balance.

Will you be affected in the same way if the lines were curved or with sharp jagged edges?
Discuss.
No. I think that if Piet Mondrian used curved or sharp jagged edges, I would not feel the same
calmness and stability. Horizontal lines signify rest and repose wile the vertical lines creates
height. Unlike in curved lines, lines used by Mondrian keep it simple. There is solidarity and
structural stability. Curved lines convey extreme emotions like restlessness and anxiety.

What do the colors evoke in the painting?

Mondrian used primary colors; red, blue and yellow, and neutrals; black and white. These basic
colors contribute to keeping the simplicity of this art piece. They evoke balance. The color
placement creates harmonious contrasts. The large portion at the upper right is colored in red.
Red is an extreme color. It depicts passion and power. It is contrasted by the small blue square
at the bottom left. Blue is a calm and serene color. It gives a peaceful mood.
