Preface
General Mathematics was written with the students in mind. It is in line with
the K to 12 Curriculum and is enriched with topics that supplement the minimum
requirements. Bring out the basic ideas and techniques as simply and clearly as
possible, and have related those ideas to other areas such as science, music, and
health to attract the reader’s attention.

Dear Student,

People who succeed have momentum. The more they succeed, the more
they want to succeed, and the more they find a way to succeed. Similarly, when
someone is failing, the tendency is to get on a downward spiral that can even
become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

To be successful you must accept all challenges that come your

way. You can’t just accept the ones you like.

God Bless and Stay Safe

Respectfully,
Mr. Francisco

Course This course design to help you think and

Description develop mathematical ideas. The key part of learning
mathematics is thinking carefully about the ideas by
yourselves, you’ll become more confident leaner in Math, as
well as in other subject and a better problem solver.

Starting Point!
A relation is a set of ordered pairs. The domain of a relation is the set of first
coordinated. The range is the set of second coordinates.

The list and set of ordered pairs below show the same relation. Each letter is paired with a
number.
Letter Number
I 4
L 5
O 6
V 8
E 3
M 6
A 2
T 8
H 4

{(I, 4), (L, 5), (O, 6), (V, 8), (E, 3), (M, 6), (A, 2), (T, 8), (H, 4)}

The domain is {I,L,O,V,E,M,A,T.H} and the range is {2,3,4,5,6,8}. Note that for each letter there
corresponds exactly one number. This is a special kind of relation called function.

A function is a relation in which each element of the domain corresponds to exactly one element
of the range.
The members of the domain can be called inputs and the members of the range can be called
outputs. Arrows can be used to be describe correspondence in the function.

This relation is a function, since the element in domain ILOVEMATH is assigned to one
element in the range. Even though the range element 4 is assigned to two elements of the domain
I and H, it is still a function since elements of the domain is assigned to only one element of the
range.
On the other hand, relation U and I are not function. In relation U, the number 2 is
assigned to two letters in the range, C and A. In relation I, 3 assigned to two letters, F and E, and
2 is assigned to two letters, B and A.
Relation U Relation I

3 E 3 F

Linear Function
A function f is a linear function if f(x)= mx + b, where m and b are real numbers, and m
and f(x) are not equal to zero.

Example
To sell T-shirts, the class needs to charge a lower price as indicated in the following
table:
Target No. Of Shirt Sale Price T-shirt
500 540pesos
900 460pesos
1300 380pesos
1700 300pesos
2100 220pesos
2500 140pesos

10 | P a g e
The price for which you can sell x printed T-shirt is called the price function p(x). p(x)
represents each data point in the table.

Solution
To write a linear equation with two variables when given two points using the slope-
intercept method, we have:

Y 2−Y 1
- Find the slope m of the line using the slope formula m= and
X 2− X 1
- Write the linear equation with two variables by substituting the values of m and
( x 1 , y 1 ) ¿ the formula y − y 1=m( x−x 1) the point-slope form of a linear equation.

Using the points P1 (500 , 540 )∧P 2 ( 900 , 460 ) , we have :

460−540 −80 −1
m= = ∨
900−500 400 5
−1
Now, substitute one of the ordered pairs and the slope, to the point-slope form.
5

y− y1 =m ( x−x 1 )
−1
y−540= ( x−500)
5
−1
y−540= x+ 100
5
−1
y= x +100+540 ¿
5
−1
y= x−640
5
y=640−0.2 x

Thus, there function is p(x) = 640-0.2x.

NOTE: To check, verify that the function p(x) = 640 – 0.2x fits each data in the table.

11 | P a g e
The Following are the other types of functions:
1. Quadratic Function
A quadratic function is any equation of the form
f(x) = ax 2+ bx + c
where a, b, and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
Note that y= x 2or is a quadratic function where b and c are both equal to 0 and a is equal
to 1.
The graph of any quadratic function is called a parabola. Hence, the graph of y= x 2is a
parabola. Parabola are shipped like cups, as shown below.

f(x) = x 2

A PARABOLA HAS A

LINE OR AXIS
OF SYMMETRY

If the coefficient of x 2 (the value of a in ax 2+ bx + c) is positive, the parabola is upward. If the

coefficient of x 2 is negative, the graph opens downward. The vertex of the parabola is the
minimum point of the graph if it opens upward. If the graphs opens downward, the vertex is the
maximum point. The vertical line passing through the vertex is the axis of symmetry. This line
divides the parabola into two symmetry parts which are mirro images of each other.

Vertex form of quadratic function

The quadratic function

f(x) = a( x−h)2 +k , a ≠ 0

is written in the vertex form. The graph is a parabola whose vertex is the point (h, k). The parabola is
symmetric to the line x=h. if a >0, the parabola opens upward; if a <0, the parabola opens downward.

Example
Find the dimensions of the largest rectangular garden that can be enclose by 60 m of fencing.

Solution
Let x and y denote the lengths of the sides of the garden. Then the area A
A= xy
must be given its maximum value.
Express A in terms of a single variable, either x or y. the total perimeter is 60 meters.
2x + 2y = 60 perimeter of a rectangle.
x + y = 30 divide both sides by 2
y = 30 – x subtract x from both sides
hence,
A = xy area of a rectangle.
A = x (30 – x) replace y by 30 – x

= 30x - x 2 distributive property

or

A = - x 2 + 30x commutative property

Write this equation in the vertex form by completing the square.

A = - ( x 2 + 30x + 225) + 225

A = - ( x +15)2 + 225

15 | P a g e
We know that the graph of the function is a parabola that opens downward and with vertex (the
highest point) at (15, 225). The absolute maximum of the function is 225. Therefore, the maximum area is
225 square meters. Since x= 15 (the width) and 30 – x = 15 (the length), the dimension that gives the area
is 15 meters by 15 meters.
