PROCEDURE FOR CALIBRATION OF DENSITOMETER

1.0 SCOPE :
(R1) This procedure covers calibration process of densitometer which are used in measurement
of radiograph density. This procedure is based on Article – 2 (T-262) of ASME Section V.

2.0 MONITORING DENSITY LIMITATION :

(R1) 2.1 A step wedge comparison film (primary density strip) shall be used for checking the
densitometer. This primary density strip shall be traceable to National standard step
tablet. The primary density strip shall have been verified with the last year by
comparison with a national standard step tablet.

2.2 For our daily use a densitometer or a secondary density strip shall be used as
comparator in place of primary density strip.

2.3 The calibration of densitometer and checking of the secondary density strip shall be
as follows :

3.0 DENSITOMETER CALIBRATION :

3.1 Adjust the zero setting of the densitometer after a warm up time of 30 minutes
(R1) before starting either the calibration verification check or production testing.

3.2 Select any position for reading the neutral density closest to 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 on
the primary density strip (minimum four points) which is traceable to national step
tablet and adjust the densitometer.

3.3 Check the density ranges of the density strip for ensuring the linearity of the
densitometer. The densities closest to 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 should not vary more
than + 0.05 density from the actual density stated on the primary density strip. If
any of this density vary more than + 0.05 density then, the linearity of the
instrument is out of tolerance and should be corrected prior to using the instrument
for measuring production of radiograph.

4.0 SECONDARY DENSITY STRIP CHECKING :

The density ranges of the secondary density strip shall be checked on the calibrated
densitometer and will be noted.

5.0 PERIODIC VERIFICATION :

5.1 Periodic verification check as described above in clause 3.3 should be performed at
the beginning of each shift after 8 hours of continuous operations or change of
operators or change of aperture whichever occur first.

5.2 If the verification readings are within + 0.05 of the values marked in the calibration
document, the equipment is ready for use. If not, re-calibration is required.

5.3 These calibration verification readings do not have to be recorded as the function is
to ensure the operator that, he/she is using the calibrated equipment.

5.4 If the calibrate verification shows a variation greater than + 0.05 density, then all
the radiographs examined since the last acceptable density check have to be
subjected to re-verification of density after the densitometer has been recalibrated.

6.0 FREQUENCY OF CALIBRATION AND DOCUMENTATION :

6.1 Full scale linearity of the densitometer has to be performed once in 90 days.
(R1) A calibration sticker has to be put showing the serial number of the densitometer
and name of official who calibrated the densitometer.

6.2 The above calibration records shall be documented.
