1. 3.0 kg/s of air is to be discharged through a smooth circular
duct at a velocity of 10 m/s. The pressure and temperature of air
in the pipe are 1.5 bar and 300K respectively. Determine the
enthalpy and internal energy of air and the diameter of duct.
Use: R = 0.287 kJ/kg-K, cp = 1.005kJ/kg-K.

Challenging part of this problem is identifying the various


relations needed to solve the problem.

2. The pressure, temperature and Mach number at the entry of a
flow passage are 2.45 bar, 26.5oC and 1.4 respectively. If the exit
Mach number is 2.5 determine for adiabatic flow of a perfect gas
(a) stagnation temperature
(b) temperature and velocity of gas at exit
(c) the flow rate per square metre of the inlet cross-section
(Use γ = 1.3, R = 0.469 kJ/kg-K)

3. The cross-section of the exit section of a control surface
enclosing an aircraft propeller is 9 m2. The mean values of air
velocities at the entry and exit of the control surface are 133 m/s
and 170 m/s respectively. Taking the density of air as 1.25 kg/m3
determine the thrust acting on the propeller. Assume steady and
incompressible flow. Apply conservation of mass and
momentum.

4. Consider a normal shock wave in air. The upstream conditions
are given by M1 = 3.0, p1 = 1 atm, and ρ1 = 1.23 kg/m3. Calculate
the downstream values of p2, T2, ρ2, M2, u2, po2 and To2.
Hint: you can also use Table A.2 for normal shock properties in
the appendix of the textbook. See also the example problems in
the textbook.
