What is DHCP?

DHCP stands for dynamic host configuration protocol.

The DHCP server automatically assigns a Dynamic IP address ,Subnet Mask,
default gateways and DNS server to the Computer in a network so they can
connect and communicate with other network devices and the internet.

In a DHCP network, a device can have a different IP address every time when they
raise a request for IP addresses to the DHCP server. DHCP server assign the IP
address as a lease because it helps to the DHCP doesn’t run out of IP address.

DHCP supports both types of IP address i.e. static and dynamic IP addresses
depend on how you configured your DHCP server.

Static IP : - Static IP is where a user assigns an IP address manually.

Dynamic Address : - Dynamic IP address is where a computer gets an IP address

From a DHCP server

We can create an IP reservation on DHCP for specific devices so there IP address

will never change. For reservation we bind the IP address with the MAC address .
Reservations are typically given to the VIP user’s laptop and desktop, network
printers, server’s routers etc.

DHCP is service that runs on server and routers. Built in DHCP service available
in router like Home router, Small Office router and Enterprise router
