13 wing pavilion

The design of the Wing Pavilion began with a simple idea in mind
- to create a pavilion that mimics the structural characteristic of
the wings of a bird, while also having the same aesthetic and
grace of one.

From studying the bone structure of a bird’s wing, we find it sim-

ple and light-weighted. So instead of stacking piles of sticks ran-
domly, we aimed to use the least amount of materials to create
“space”. We started by placing two pairs of crossing structure
beams (reinterpreting the bone structure of a bird’s wing) and
connecting them with cables (creating “space” beneath and the
illusion of the movements of the wings). Each component are in-
terconnected and inseparable, similar to how bones are kept in
place by muscle. By opting to create the hyperbolic paraboloid
surface, we were able to create the curved characteristic that of a
bird’s wing with relatively rigid materials at hand.

The result is a pavilion that looks constantly on the merge to tak-

ing off, structurally inspired by the skeleton of a bird’s wing.
