A day in the life of a teacher

The teacher
Miss Taylor is a teacher in a special school. The
school takes children with learning difficulties from
the age of 3 to 11.

Miss Taylor begins work at 7.45am each week day.

She arrives at school early because there are lots of
lessons to prepare before the children arrive.

The children start school at 8.45am Miss Taylor greets

them at the door and takes them into the classroom.
The teacher marks the register and then it is time for
assembly.

Miss Taylor has two teaching assistants to help her in class. The teaching assistants are
called T.A.s and their role is to support the teacher and the pupils throughout the day.

Each Wednesday the children go swimming. They go to a special warm pool called a
hydrotherapy pool. Many of the children are in wheelchairs and there is a hoist to help
them get in and out of the water.

On their return, the children have a snack of toast and milk. Miss Taylor takes them out
to the playground for breaktime at around 10.45am. When it is her turn for playground
duty she stays outside with the children.

After playtime, the children study Literacy. Miss Taylor has picture symbols to help
pupils with their reading.

Lunch takes place in the hall at midday. All the children

gather together. Sometimes Miss Taylor sits and eats with
the children if she is not too busy in the classroom.

After lunch, the children are taught Science and French by

specialist teachers. The bell goes at the end of the day at
3.00pm and the children go home. Miss Taylor has a staff
meeting on Wednesdays, so she stays behind until 4.15pm.

In the evening, Miss Taylor tries to relax, but often she has
homework of her own to do ready for the next day.

Luckily, Miss Taylor loves her job!
