Multimedia Information and Media

What is Multimedia?
-Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text,
graphics, drawings, still and moving images, animation, audio and any other media
where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and processed
digitally.

Characteristics
 Multimedia systems must be computer-controlled
 Multimedia systems are integrated
 The information they handle must be represented digitally
 The interface to the final presentation of media is usually interactive

Types of Multimedia Information and Their Formats

Forms of Multimedia Information Sources


1. Text Information – it is written or printed which tend to give or share ideas and
information.
2. Visual Information – visual resources are one of a kind.
3. Audio Information – this is a narration track that aids blind and/or visually
impaired consumers of visual media.
4. Motion Information - this is the use of moving texts, images or graphics on
display to give information.
5. Manipulative Information – this refers to materials, programs, applications and
the like that people use in order to come up with a new information.

Advantages of Multimedia Information


 Multimedia enhances the effect of text presentations.
 Improves the quality of presentation and retains the attention of audience.
 It can be used for educational purposes as well as entertainment purposes.
 It is quick and easier to operate for the instructor.
 Multimedia presentations can be modified easily.
 Through participation in multimedia activities, students can learn real world skills
related to technology.
 It helps the learners to express and represent their prior knowledge and provides
them with many learning opportunities.

Disadvantages of Multimedia Information


 Complex to create.
 Time consuming.
 Use of multimedia is expensive, video files can be large and takes a long
download frame that may leave students with nothing to do.
 Sometimes, excessive information about certain topic leads to cognitive overload
and it becomes difficult for the students to understand all the information
presented to them.

Values of Multimedia Information in Education


 It provide students with opportunities to represent and express their prior
knowledge
 Accessing and interpreting information, organizing their personal knowledge and
representing what they know to others encourage deep reflective thinking and;
 Create personally meaningful learning opportunities.
