Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.

Q.1 (a) (i) define Stage Efficiency 03

(ii) define ideal stage
(iii) define Mass transfer Coefficient
(b) State and discuss the types of diffusion with suitable example. 04
(c) Discuss classification of mass transfer operation in detail. 07

Q.2 (a) State Fick’s law of diffusion and prove that DAB = DBA. 03
(b) The diffusivity of the gas pair oxygen- carbon tetrachloride determined 04
by observing steady state evaporation of ccl4 in to a tube containing O2.
The distance between CCl4 liquid level and top of the tube is 17.1 cm.
the total pressure on the system is 100.63 KN/m2 and temperature is 0
0
C. The vapour pressure of CCl4 is at that temperature is 4.39 KN/m2. If
0.0208cm3 of carbon tetrachloride was evaporated in 10 hours of steady
state operation, what should be the value of the diffusivity of carbon
tetrachloride through oxygen?
M= 154 kg/ kmole
(c) In an oxygen -nitrogen mixture at 1 std atm, 27o C, the concentration at two 07
planes 2 mm apart are 10% and 20% respectively. Calculate the flux of the
oxygen for the case (i) Nitrogen is non diffusing and (ii) there is equimolar
counter diffusion of the two gases.
DO2  N 2  1.81  10 5 m 2 / s  D AB
at 25 0 C
OR
(c) Explain molecular diffusion in gases in detail. Also discuss steady state 07
diffusion of A through non diffusing B.
Q.3 (a) (i) Define chemical equilibrium. 03
(ii) For sparingly soluble gas which phase is controlling?
(iii) Define Absorption Factor.
(b) Write a short note on analogy between transport processes. 04
(c) Show that overall resistance in diffusion between two phases follows two 07
resistance theory
OR
Q.3 (a) Discuss Penetration theory and state how it is different from Film theory 03
(b) Define F-type and k-type mass transfer coefficients. Also derive the 04
relationship for steady state equimolar counter diffusion between F and k type

(c) A gas is to be freed of its solute content by scrubbing with pure solvent 07
as an absorbent. The circumstances are as follows:
Absorber: Gas in, 0.02 Kmol/s at 26 oC, pt = 1.07*105 N/m2, containing
2.0% by volume of solute vapors and 95% removal is required. The pure
solvent is to enter at 26 oC, and has an average molecular weight 250.
The Solvent circulation rate of 1.5 times the minimum is to be used.
Solvent – Solute solutions are ideal. The temperature will be constant at
1
26 oC. At 26 oC, the vapor pressure of the solute is p = 13330 N/m2.
