(c) CO2 and Air are in equimolal counter diffusion with each other in the tube of 50 mm 07
diameter and 1 m length. The total pressure is 1 atm and the temperature is 25°C. The
partial pressure of CO2 at one end of the tube is 190 mm Hg while at the other end of
the tube is 95 mm Hg. Estimate the mass transfer rates (in kg/s) of CO2 and air through
the tube. Diffusivity is 0.16 x 10-4 m2/s.

towers:
(i) Weeping (ii) Dumping (iii) Tray Spacing
(b) With neat diagram discuss Venturi Scrubber. 04
(c) If 1000 kg/h of a nicotine (C)-water (A) solution containing 1% nicotine is to be 07
counter currently extracted with kerosene at 20 °C to reduce the nicotine content to
0.1% , determine (a) the minimum kerosene rate and (b) the number of theoretical
stage required if 1150 kg of kerosene is used per hour.

(b) Explain counter current multiple contact, Shanks system for leaching. 04
(c) CS2 is to be absorbed from a dilute gas mixture of CS2–N2 into pure non-volatile oil 07
at atm. Pressure in a counter–current tray type absorber. The mole fraction of CS2 in
inlet gas stream is 0.05 and the flow rate of gas stream G, is 1500 kmole/hr. The
equilibrium relation is given by: y = 0.5x, where x is the mole fraction of CS2 in liquid
stream. It is desired to reduce the mole fraction of CS2 exit gas stream to 0.005.
