1 LEARNING OUTCOMES (LO):

Construct of an AC electrical circuit and measured related electrical parameter using

appropriate electrical equipment. ( P4 , PLO 5 )

2 OBJECTIVE

At the end of this practical work, student should be able to:

1. To understand the principle of three phase system and analyzed the three phase
system with balanced load condition.
3
THEORY
• Three-phase supply is generated when 3 coils are placed 120° apart and the whole
rotated in a uniform magnetic field.
• Three-phase generators have three coils fixed at 120° to each other with the same
amplitude and frequency.
• Three phase system consist of three lines and one neutral conductor which are
normally known as Red ( R ), Yellow ( Y ), Blue ( B ) and Neutral (Black).
• The national standard phase sequence is R, Y, B.
• Two ways to interconnect the three phases is :
a. Star connection system
b. Delta connection system

Connection Connection

• Phase and line element:

 Phase voltage (Vph) : Measured between live and neutral line.
 Line voltage (VL) : The voltage measured between the two live lines.
 Line current (IL) : The current that is measured in any line conductor.
 Phase current (Iph) : The current measured in any phase load.
• The formula:
STAR CONNECTION DELTA CONNECTION
𝐼𝐿 = 𝐼𝑃𝐻 𝐼𝐿 = √3 𝐼𝑃𝐻
𝑉𝐿 = √3𝑉𝑃𝐻 𝑉𝐿 = 𝑉𝑃𝐻
𝑃3∅ = √3 𝑉𝐿 𝐼𝐿 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝜃ᵒ 𝑃3∅ = √3 𝑉𝐿 𝐼𝐿 𝑐𝑜𝑠 𝜃ᵒ
𝑃3∅ = 3𝑉𝑃𝐻 𝐼𝑃𝐻 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃° 𝑃3∅ = 3𝑉𝑃𝐻 𝐼𝑃𝐻 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃°

LAB PREPARATION
i. Calculate the theoretical value of voltage and current. Show your calculation steps.
ii. Fill up the calculated values into Table 6.1 and Table 6.2.

PROCEDURE:
i. Make the connection as shown in figure 6.3.
ii. After the lecturer has verified the circuit connection, adjust the variable three phase
power supply to obtain 200 V AC, line voltage (VL).
iii. Turn ON the three phase power supply.
iv. Measure line current IR, IB, and IY and phase current IRN, IBN, and IYN. Fill in Table 6.1.
v. Measure also line voltage VRB, VBY and VYR and phase voltage VRN, VBY and VYN. Fill
in Table 6.2.
