PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Cholinergic effects Management of mild allergic reactions,
Drowsiness anaphylaxis, motion sickness, insomnia

Complications Medication Administration


Drowsiness, dizziness, hallucinations, headaches, involuntary motor activity, seizures, tremor
Anticholinergic effects, dry mouth, constipation
Do not crush or chew
Prolonged QT interval enteric-coated formulations
Fixed drug eruptions, pruritus, rash, urticaria
Injection site pain Do not take w. alcohol or other
CNS depressants
Take 30 min to 2 hr before
activity for motion sickness

Contraindications/Precautions
Contraindications: newborns & children under 2y, breastfeeding
women, narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, acute asthma
exacerbation Nursing Interventions
Precautions: children, older adults, history of asthma, urinary retention,
open-angle glaucoma, hypertension, impaired kidney or liver function Monitor client when ambulating
Encourage sips of water
Give drug w. food
Monitor urinary retention
Interactions Recommend high fiber foods

CNS depressants/alcohol cause additive CNS depression

Client Education
Take drug at night to minimize daytime
sedative effect
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Avoid driving & activities that require
mental alertness
Improvement of allergic reaction, absence of rhinitis, Suck on hard candy
urticaria Take w. food
Increase fluid & fiber intake
Relief of motion sickness, decreased nausea & vomiting Report difficulty urinating
Take laxative as needed
