SLIP JOINT

(Vented or Volume Balanced Type)

l ;. .

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the Halliburton Slip Joint is to previde an

expansion joint in the string to help compensate for the up and
down movement of a floating drilling vessel. This allows a con
stant weight to rest on tools further down hole. This teles
coping tool ca n also be used below the testing tools to previde
free travel when manipulating the pipe to reposition the tester
valve during a test.

Slip Joints are specifically đesigneđ for floating vessel

operations incluđing: Open Hole Testing, Hook Wall Testing,
anđ Pressuring Operations (such as Squeezin g, Treating, etc.)
with c ompression packers.

ADVANTAGES:

1. Slip Joints are volume balanced internally to help keep the

interna! pressure of the pipe constant as the floating
vessel moves up anđ down.

2. These telescoping devices help keep a constant weight on

downhole tools-

3. All Slip Joints are either splined or bave hexa9onal mandrels

so that right hand torque can be transmitted through them.

-. .-:-·f;;:t,-::::"l·. 4.
When used below testing tools, Slip Joints can provide free
· ·· .. .

travel needed while manipulating pipe for tester valve

operation during a test. In this application a Slip Joint
acts as an extension joint and provides S f eet of travel per
joint. The pressure-balance feature helps minimize pressure
surges that could be recorđed on the pressure chart.

5. Because they are internally pressure balanced and full open

ing, Slip Joints can be particularly advantaqeous when used
below the FUL-FLO™ HYDROSPRING® tester as an extension joint.

6. In floating vessel operation where provisions are made that

permit hanging the pipe in the well hea d during a test, Slip
Joints previde a simple way to insure that the proper amount
of weight is maintained on downhole tools.

7. When used with a Slip Joint Safety Valve attached, prov1s1on

is made for helping control a well in the event the pipe parts.

DESCRIPTION:

The principle of the Slip Joint is: For each foot the pipe
lengthens at the Slip Joint when the vessel m o s upwarđ, an
increase in the internal volwne o f the pipe 'O'Ccurs.
At t h e same
time, a differential piston within the S lip Joint displaces the
same amount of fluid into the pipe. The net result is no change
of interna! volurne. A downward movernent of the vessel reverses
the displacement. Vented type Slip Joi nts are not externally
balanceđ.

Each Slip Joint has five feet of trave!. More than one Slip
Joint may be used to giye additional stroke but they must be
located together, one on top of the other, becau e the hydraulics s
of the tool requires it to be locateđ at only one point in the
string. Where more than one Slip Joint is used, one on top of
the other, the top Slip Joint will theoretically make its five
feet of trave! then the next one below anđ so on. A slight burnp
may be noticeable on the weight indicator a s each Slip.Joint
shoulders. \

,,,.A,„,Slip Joint can be locateđ by simply wei9bin9 tbe strinq aa

it qoes in the bole. When the đesired packer setting weight is
shown on the weight indicator (not counting weight of tools,
anchor, and traveling blocks) put the Slip Joint in the string.
(
If water cuahion is used, it must be added as the pipe is run.

Slip Joint for DST from FLoating Vessels

tik..(
The slip joint was designed to be uaed on drilling bar es on offshore g
operations. The barge anchored to the ocean floor is allow to move up and

down with the waves and swells tening to stretch the pipe and take weight off
.

of the packer or packers. Extension of the slip join t in the pipe string

compensates for the up and down movement of the barge allowing a constant

weight to be applied to the tools at the bottom of the hole.

The slip joint is specifically designed for formation testing op-

erations--including open hole testing, and hook-wall and RTTS packer testing

or any pressuring operating where compresaion packera are used.

The slip joint has a five foot stroke and is volume balanced internally.

As the pipe length increases or shortens as the drilling barge moves up and

down the interna! volume of the pipe wi:i.l remain conatant.

If additional stroke is needed, two or more slip joints may be run

toqether. Calculations must be made to locate their relative position in the

pipe string so that a constant weight is kept on the packers.

Principle of Operation
.... -.:· ....

As a swell or a wave moves the barge upward the interna! volume of the

pipe is increased by approximately 52 cubic inches. A differential piston in

the slip joint displaces approximately 52 cubic inches of fluid into the pipe

interior with the net results that no interna! volume change takes place. A

downward movement of the barge reverses the displacement.

-89-

\

\
One method for conveniently location the slip joint in the pipe string is

the we ight indicator method. This involves knowing the depth at which the

pa cke r is to be set, th e packer setting weight, mud w e ight and weight on the

weight indicator as the tool string is lowered in the well.
