From Vietnam to Grenada, to Libya, t0 Panama, the A7 has proven time and again that it is a capable, effective performer in a combat arena. Designed for the air-to-ground role, the A7 attack aircraft was built for tough jobs. That's why when the Air Force needed a combat-proven, cost-effective attack airplane, LTV Aircraft Products Group supplied an answer - the A7F. HISTORY ‘Two prototypes ~ designated YA7F ~ were built under contract to the USAF. The first flight of the YA-7F took place November 29, 1989, from LTV’s Dallas-area facilities. The first aircraft arrived at Edwards AFB on December 20, 1989, 10 begin a 9-month flight test program. The two YAJF aircraft will fly approximately 140 test flights during that time. The flight test program will demonstrate the aircraft's enhanced capabilities. NEXT- GENERATION A-7 The YA-TF modification program - one of the most extensive ever performed on an in- service aircraft ~ upgrades the A7D’s capabilities to provide a unique combination of maneuverability, lethality and survivability. BASELINE AIRCRAFT Air National Guard A7D * ELIR provisions ‘* Automatic terrain following * Head-up display ~ F-16 C/D derivative * New navigation weapons delivery computer ‘The two YA-TFs are equipped with a baseline Low-Altitude Night Attack System - known as LANA. * The two prototypes have the LTV-designed LANA system, which allows pilots to operate at low altitudes day or night and under the weather. * 78 ATDIKs already have this capability. * AJFs will have the capability to operate with any podded FLIR system, such as LANA, PATHFINDER or LANTIRN. All of these modifications ~ combine with the excellent range and payload capabilities, of the A7D. The result: * Responsive ~ Arrives combat-ready without tankers = Around-the-clock attack capability — Compatible with all ground forces communication © Lethal ~ Improved target acquisition; advanced weapons, and up to 17,380-pound multiple-ordnance load © Survivable - High performance and threat avoidance © Effective ~ Impressive targets-killed-to- aircraft-lost ratio ‘The modernized A-TF could make a powerful contribution to America’s defense. YA-7F MODIFICATION The new Pratt & Whitney FI00-PW-220 has nearly twice the thrust of the Allison TF41 in an A-7D. The result: © Improved acceleration from 400 to 550 knots in less than 15 seconds ‘© 7-g turn capability will permit high speed sustained evasive maneuvers * Decreased exposure time in the threat area Forward wing strakes and new vertical fit ‘* Designed to improve high angle-of-attack performance Airframe © Fuselage stretch * Unit horizontal tail anhedral ‘* Augmented flaps/lift dump spoilers Equipment © New engine ~ Flight-tested P&W FI00-PW-220 ~ Fit-checked FIl0-GE-100 Onboard molecular sieve oxygen generating system Modified environmental control system Continuous-cycle jet fuel starter Standard central air data computer Reliability and maintainability improvements include: © An onboard molecular sieve oxygen generating system (MSOGS) © A modified environmental control system for enhanced capability to support any additional avionics © New fuel system COST-EFFECTIVE From the front line to the bottom line, the ACTF is right on the money. Even with enhanced capabilities, the A7F remains a cost-effective solution. Because the ADs are existing assets, the entire A7 ANG fleet could be upgraded at less than one-half the cost of new comparably-equipped aircraft. The A7F will be faster, more powerful ~ developed exclusively for the ground support role ~ at significant cost savings. 4,000-FLIGHT- HOUR. WARRANTY The ATF - if selected for production ~ would also have what most other aircraft don't ~ a 4,000-flight-hour warranty. ‘That's approximately 20 years of flight hours. In addition to modifications included in the YAJF, LTV will replace the lower wing skins on the ATFs ~ increasing the structural life of the aircraft ~ allowing the A7F to remain a viable asset well into the 21st century.
